Has LangLang gone mad?

Lang Lang said he chose 'My Motherland' for a White House dinner because of its beauty. But U.S. conservatives and some mainland Chinese say the piece, known from a 1956 anti-American film, was a slap.
Chinese-born pianist Lang Lang denied Monday that he sought to insult the United States with the choice of a song he played at a White House state dinner last week, despite the claims of some mainland Chinese and conservatives in the U.S.
Lang Lang, the 28-year-old virtuoso who performed at a dinner for Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday, said he played "My Motherland" not because of its anti-American associations but entirely "for the beauty of its melody."

The piece was featured in a 1956 Chinese movie about soldiers in the Korean War that expresses strong anti-American sentiments. The film tells the story of the Battle of Triangle Hill, in which Chinese troops suffer hardship, but ultimately triumph over their American adversaries.

American conservatives and some mainland Chinese, in a rare convergence of views, have been asserting online that the pianist intended to insult the United States.
Lang Lang, who lives in both the U.S. and China, issued a statement saying: "I selected this song because it has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. It was selected for no other reason but for the beauty of its melody."
He said his goal was to "bridge cultures together through the beauty and inspiration of music … America and China are my two homes. I am most grateful to the United States for providing me with such wonderful opportunities, both in my musical studies and for furthering my career."
Lang Lang will be in Southern California on Tuesday, performing with the Pacific Symphony in Costa Mesa.
Tommy Vietor, a White House spokesman, said the song is "widely known and popular in China for its melody. Lang Lang played the song without lyrics or reference to any political theme .... Any suggestion that this was an insult to the United States is just flat wrong."
One Chinese blogger posted an item on the Sina news portal saying that it was "deeply meaningful to play this in the United States. But I don't know if the Americans can understand. Ha ha."
Haha.

Obviously a not so subtle insult to the US.  He takes our money for concerts and recordings, and then insults our President at the White House.  As others have suggested, if the opposite occured on Chinese soil, the musician would have been escorted out of the country, and banned for life.
Such a display of disrespect makes me think it's time to boycott Lang Lang.  I guess his beautiful music sounds like tin on my ears.

"But U.S. conservatives and some mainland Chinese say the piece, known from a 1956 anti-American film, was a slap."
Honestly, what else could it really have been? Fortunately for Lang Lang, he performed his obscenity on U.S. soil because I'm sure if it were an American in China that presumably insulted the Communist Government, that person would be in chains!

So much hystery online about “My Motherland’ played by Lang Lang in White House is found. But you’ll find only few lines of lyric which might hurt insecure and paranoid Americans feeling,

“If friends are here, there is fine wine
if the jackal comes
What greets it is the hunting rifle”.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M...

But if Americans chooses to be a jackel instead of friends, who could stop them and what they could expect the Chinese to do?

Easy, Americans. You are changing daily into an unmature girl. The weakness comes from within, not a from a boy musician. Its only a song form an old 1950’s film most of Chinese even don’t know the lyric of. If US national anthem were played, you’d sure feel great. But would Englishmen’d feel hurt too? You guys’ve already reminded me of witch hunting Cultural Revolution, if not McCarthy time.

Meanwhile, If America is best at snubbing its greatest lender by sending carriers at his door using lender’s money, why cannot China be best at snubbing the ignorant host. From now on, you guys should learn, though hard, to get used to treating the temporary Number Two equally,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M...

You also have the boot of an incredibly dictatorial regime on your faces; you're nothing but Winston Smith, who had no choice but to love his tormentor while awaiting execution.
I have news for you: The US will blow you all to hell before it ever pays back your "loans." You're just too stupid and arrogant to realize that!
Ni Hao!

The song is not overtly anti-american in lyrics. In fact you can not find the word US or America in the lyrics. But its anti-American message is well understood by anyone in China who knows about the historical and cinematic context of the song. The song is an emoticon, a passcode or an wink in Chinese nonverbal cummunication. The meaning is never misunderstood by ‘us’ (Chinese) but hardly noticeable to ‘them’ (non-Chninese, especially Americans, the unidentified ‘beasts’ in the song.

To the editiors: Please take a look at this interview, http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/0z_YeRY7-TM/ (Chinese). Lang Lang mentions, briefly but explicitly, that he chose the song out of Chinese pride.

I find it hard to believe that as a musician who may have done this song several times and a Chinese who knows the history of this song, he didn’t do this intentionally.

In another blog, which attacts maily China-born Chinese now teaching in American universities, Lang Lang’s choice of music got a commentary, long before the WSJ picked it up. The shared concern is that attentive Americans may get hurt.
But, wait. How many Americans — the average folks, not the ones who spends time talking their heads off about US-China relations — actually paid a dime of attention to whatever music was played in the White House on that day and whoever the musician was?
Relax, America. You are strong and your primary source of weakness comes from within, not a musician who grew up in China

Admit it or not, Lang Lang was just a nobody before he came to the US. Now he has become an anti-America hero highly praised by the Chinese nationalists. This is not the first time that Lang Lang plays such pro-China anti-US musics. He did so in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He did so in the Chinese New Year gaga.

Judging from the fact that he has devoted so much time to perfect his piano skill and the fact he came to US to study at a young age, I dont believe it is possible that Langlang knows every Chinese movie, particularly the oldies. In addition, why would anyone intentionally hurt his audience’s feelings if he knew before hand?
