Tata Motors, a leading supplier of vehicles to the Indian armed forces, unveiled two new combat vehicles at Defexpo 2014.

The first is the Kestrel, an 8x8 wheeled armoured amphibious vehicle designed and developed indigenously by Tata and the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) procurement agency.

According to Tata, the Kestrel can support a range of armaments and was shown at Defexpo 2014 with a 30 mm cannon installed on a Kongsberg Protector MCT-30R turret.

The Kestrel is understood to be aimed at India's Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) programme, which is designed to replace India's ageing BMP-1 and BMP-2 vehicles with around 2,000 new vehicles.

Weighing 22.5 to 26 tonnes (depending on the armour configuration), the Kestrel is 7.8 m long, 2.95 m wide and 2.28 m high.

Featuring all-wheel independent suspension, it has a maximum road speed of 100 km/h and a 10 km/h amphibious speed, according to Tata Motors.

The Kestrel is offered in a basic configuration with NATO STANAG 4569 Level 1 protection, with additional modular armour packages offering improved protection.

In addition, the fuel tanks are placed outside the crew compartment for extra safety.

Designed to carry 12 soldiers, including a crew of 2, the Kestrel offers situational awareness to the driver via three periscopes and front and rear-view infrared cameras. Radio communication systems for the Kestrel are provided by Thales.

The LAMV is a 4x4 light patrol vehicle in the 8-tonne class. It combines an integrated blast and ballistic protection system, including a protected all-composite detachable crew pod and V-shaped hull for protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 2.
