Chinesearchaeologists have unearthed 110 new terracotta warriors that laid buried forcenturies, an official said Monday, part of the famed army built to guard thetomb of China's first emperor.
The life-size figures were excavated near the Qin Emperor's mausoleum in China's northern Xi'an city over the course of three years,and archaeologists also uncovered 12 pottery horses, parts of chariots, weaponsand tools.
"The... excavation on the 200-square-metre (2,152-square-feet) site hasfound a total of 110 terracotta figurines," Shen Maosheng from the QinShihuang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum -- which overseesthe tomb -- told AFP.
"The most significant discovery this time around is that the relics thatwere found were well-preserved and colourfully painted," Shen, deputy headof the museum's archaeology department, said.
He added that archaeologists had pinpointed the location of another 11 warriorsbut had yet to unearth them.
The discovery is the latest in China'scultural sector, after experts found that the Great Wall of China -- which like the Terracotta Army is a UNESCO WorldHeritage site -- was much longer than previously thought.
Shen said experts had expected the colours on some of the warriors and waresuncovered at the site to have faded over the centuries, and were surprised tosee how well preserved they still were.
The finds also included a shield that was reportedly used by soldiers in theQin Dynasty (221-206 BC), with red, green and white geometric patterns.
Qin Shihuang -- the Qin emperor who had the army built -- presided over theunification of Chinain 221 BC and is seen as the first emperor of the nation.
The ancient terracotta army was discovered in 1974 by a peasant digging a well.It represents one of the greatest archaeological finds of modern times, and waslisted as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
The news comes after a five-year archaeological survey found the Great Wall of China was more than double the previouslyestimated length.
The survey -- released to the public last week -- found the wall was 21,196kilometres (13,170 miles) long, compared to an official 2009 figure of 8,851kilometres.
Beijingauthorities on Saturday also reiterated plans to open two new sections of theGreat Wall to tourists and expand two other existing areas to help meet boomingdemand.

Alot ofthe history in Chinais remanufactured after being destroyed in the 70s...but it is a great place tovisit!! I went for a month, also been to india twice....well worth the trip!

It isalways amazing the skills and crafts that those artisans from centuries ago wereable to produce and last so long! And all without our so called modern methods.The first public showing of these warriors should be fantastic. And the newsabout the Great Wall being more than twice the original length is incrediblegiven the methods of construction and engineering that they had at that time.Now we can't even get a highway built that lasts longer than 20 years withoutmajor renovations that isn't even as long as the Great Wall.

I hadthe honor to see the life size statues of soldiers a horse and chariot from theterracota army in an exhibition at the Royal Ontario Museum and the statuesare breathtaking! The details on their faces, their clothing and armors are soprecise, it is amazing! The workmanship for the era in which these statues weremade it's just inspiring!

Had theopportunity to visit several years ago. It is a fascinating place and worth thetrip. The colors mentioned are a strange thing. As soon as they are exposed tothe air they begin to fade. As far as history is concerned this is one of akind. Recommended to anyone wanting to experience a find that spans a time thatfew people even knew existed. This was the only sight that the preservation wascompletely intact. All the other tombs and relics in the area have been robbedand artifacts sold years ago. Must again someday.

秦始皇—兵马俑的缔造者—在公元前221年统一中国，被视为中国的第一个皇帝。
古老的兵马俑是1974年一个农民在挖井时发现的。成为那个时代最伟大的考古发现，并在1987年列为世界文化遗产。
这条新闻发布在另一个考古发现之后，即经过五年的调查研究之后发现中国长城比之前估计的长度要长两倍。
在上周向公众公布的调查结果发现，长城有21196公里（12170英里）长，之前官方2009年发布的数据是8851公里。
为了应对两个已存景点不断上升的客流压力，北京官方在周六宣布计划增加两个长城观光点。

Alot ofthe history in Chinais remanufactured after being destroyed in the 70s...but it is a great place tovisit!! I went for a month, also been to india twice....well worth the trip!

I wasjust here Saturday and took pictures of the workers! We also saw a camera crewwith a crane shooting footage between the aisles of warriors. Very cool stuff!

It isalways amazing the skills and crafts that those artisans from centuries ago wereable to produce and last so long! And all without our so called modern methods.The first public showing of these warriors should be fantastic. And the newsabout the Great Wall being more than twice the original length is incrediblegiven the methods of construction and engineering that they had at that time.Now we can't even get a highway built that lasts longer than 20 years withoutmajor renovations that isn't even as long as the Great Wall.

I hadthe honor to see the life size statues of soldiers a horse and chariot from theterracota army in an exhibition at the Royal Ontario Museum and the statuesare breathtaking! The details on their faces, their clothing and armors are soprecise, it is amazing! The workmanship for the era in which these statues weremade it's just inspiring!

Had theopportunity to visit several years ago. It is a fascinating place and worth thetrip. The colors mentioned are a strange thing. As soon as they are exposed tothe air they begin to fade. As far as history is concerned this is one of akind. Recommended to anyone wanting to experience a find that spans a time thatfew people even knew existed. This was the only sight that the preservation wascompletely intact. All the other tombs and relics in the area have been robbedand artifacts sold years ago. Must again someday.
