Amid a raging row over illegal detention and torture of two Indian traders in Yiwu, China on Thursday hoped that India will "positively educate" its nationals doing business here to abide by the Chinese laws, practise honesty and operate legally.
Commenting on the incident, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that "China is a country under the rule of law," adding that China values its friendship with India and always protects the legal rights of foreigners, including Indian citizens.
"China hopes that the Indian side can positively educate and guide the country's people doing business in China to abide by Chinese laws and regulations, practise honesty and trustworthiness and operate legally," Hong said.
He said the two Indian businessmen -- Shyamsunder Agrawal and Deepak Raheja -- were "caught in disputes with local business people" and had left the eastern Chinese city of Yiwu yesterday with an official from the Indian Consulate General in Shanghai.
"During their stay in Yiwu, they were put up in hotels and allowed to act freely, and their security was not hindered when they went out to eat," Hong claimed.
Chinese traders were unwilling to let the two Indians go asserting that their company owed millions of Yuan for products bought from them and they would be permitted to leave only after payments were made.
The two Indians, who were shifted to Shanghai last night, are expected to be in the eastern Chinese city for the next few days until they recuperate from scars of torture and ill-treatment suffered at the hands of the local traders.
China yesterday assured India that it has initiated criminal proceedings against five locals suspected for the torture of the two Indians.
http://www.ltaaa.com/wtfy/3952.htmlAmid a raging row over illegal detention and torture of two Indian traders in Yiwu, China on Thursday hoped that India will "positively educate" its nationals doing business here to abide by the Chinese laws, practise honesty and operate legally.

funny to see how defensive Indians become on stories like this. Look, the fact of the matter is that Indians have been caught trying to steal from Chinese suppliers in China. Rather than just admit to the facts and move on, most of you Indians act as if the Indian "businessmen" are victims. China certainly has its share of problems, but this story is about Indians behaving like thieves in China and not the other way around.

facts of the issue say otherwise. These Indians were employees of the company and have been made scapegoats for the criminal actions of the Yemeni owner of the company. I dont see any Chinese commentator censuring the Yemeni criminal, but every Chinese commentator is jumping in to "advise" the Indians on how to conduct business. My dear Chinese friends, dont forget that your trade with India is worth 67 billion dollars. Yemen on the other hand takes your money and exports terrorists to you (via Pakistan). Please make your choices wisely.

Chinese advising 'honesty and legality' to Indian traders like dacoits advising 'honesty and virtues' to thieves!!!!

gin China happens according to law. To do business in China you need to have political or social contacts. This is called Guanxi In local chinese terms. Chinese courts even themselves dont follow according to law. There is rampant corruption, dishonesty and immorality in China. China is a country of immorals and selfish opportunists.

Indian traders should work honestly and legally.... ha...haha...haha.ha ... what are you talk about man... Indian traders are million miles away from honesty for the past 2000 years or more. Indian Traders have Zero honesty in their blood ..... look at all the Indian traders from West and North India living and working in East India & Assam... thieves

foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that "China is a country under the rule of law," lol...biggest joke in 2012....wtf?? really ??? rule?? which rule u r talking abt??making duplicate apple macbook and selling them for 2000 yuan in a open mall?? duplicating indian drugs and indian food products and selling in india by the help of some m**fer indian businessman who only wants money.....duplicating nike, puma and other big brand company and selling them in TAOBAO( i know this bcoz i was there for 6 yrs).. and when u asking government to stop this they will remain silent. .is this ur rule??enough is enough....dont make stupid joke infront of media...we know ur government very much!!

no, no......indians should be dishonest to buy goods in china since they are cheap duplicate and pirated; but all ordered in india, manufactured in china and sold to poor slumdogs in india.

need to do is ban & Cut down on Chinese imports & promote domestic manufacturers. Catch hold of a few Chinese in India and extend similar hospitality as endured by the Indians. China is labeled as the most pirated patent thieves in the world, lets not talk about there diplomacy let be in trade, currency,or even to the the extent of being close to rogue nation in the world like Syria, Iran,North Korea & Pakistan

yes indeed. india should immediately stop (note it is not ban or cut down) all trade import/export with china immediately. recall all our ambassadors in china and deport all chinese ones in india. then close all borders so that no connections whatsoever with them. except india which is pure, china and all other nations are rogues including syria, iran, north kore and pakistan.

Chinese only for low quality products . Everyone knows China has the biggest foreign direct investment, and a lot of factories run by such foreign investors export trash to all over the world, especially their home country. When they make dirty money, China bears the bad name as it is "made in China". There are also a lot of foreign importors coming to China asking for low price products with no requirement on the quality. China government should take action on supervising the quality of the goods exported from China, but the importing country should also be responsible for supervising the importors. It would never be workable to ban all trades with another country, which will only isolate yourself.

Why is everyone getting so excited? Don't Indian businessmen cheat other Indians also? They probably tried the same with the Chinese and were unlucky enough to get caught before they could run away. But they were lucky to escape alive. China has executed even state governors for corruption. Instead of blindly supporting corrupt businessmen just because they happen to be Indian, we should use some common to understand what most likely happened in Yiwu. At least there is one country where corrupt businessmen will have fear of the consequences.

reading so many posts, I think I should share my view with my indian friends here to avoid more hatered. Sometimes hatered is caused by misleading information and lacking of communication. I cannot ensure my comment is not baised as I'm a Chinese, but I will try my best to be fair and objective. Forgive my bad English as I'm not native English speaker. First, I could briefly summarize this "incident" as follows: It is claimed that two Indian businessmen were in trade disputes with local suppliers in Yiwu, and were be brought to court for law suit. An Indian diplomat come to help and try to bring them to Shanghai, but was "ill-treated" by the local police, and as a result, this civil case upgrated to a diplomatic issue. But I would like to figure out the true face of the story based on my knowledge of the local business (I was born and brought up in a city not far from Yiwu, so I'm very familiar with the local business and practice): Though Yiwu city is a trade hub in China now, most of the products traded in the market are "low-value" smallwares, such like toys, clothes, stationeries, etc. Most of the products are manufactured in private-run small factories. Most of the suppliers of such products are not the manufacturors, but the middleman. They usually buy the products from the factories on credit. When they get payment from the importors (the indian businessman in this case), they pay back to the factories. However, if the fail to get the payment from the importor, the facotory owner will still seek payment from such middleman. If the middlement do not pay, he will get a bad name in local market and his business career should end immediately. I can easiliy understand how angry such suppliers will be when they learned that the owner of the importor has run away. They must have taken all actions, including some extreme actions like detaining the indian employees. But I don't believe the local police will let the local businessman to have any voilent action against foreigners (foreigners are always respected by common Chinese people). So the true story may be, the suppliers try to stop the indian businessman to leave and bring a law suit at the local court. They are angry and may show aggressive behaviers towards the indian businessman. The police are engaged to protect these indians and prevent the things upgraded to a big deplomatic problem (sad that they not acheive the goal). The indian businessmen are scared and called the deplomat to offer help, but the deplomat failed to bring them out of Yiwu as the local authority knows well what it means to the angry suppliers, and is scared the suppliers will shift their angry to the government.

You are missing a vital point. Please be objective like you promised or else your views wil have to be considered biased. The Indian traders were only employees of a firm whose owner cheated the Chinese traders. The Indian traders were themselves cheated when the owner ran away and left them to manage the situation. Not only the Indian diplomat, the traders themselves were physically assaulted by the Chinese traders. Now can you comment objectively? As I see it objectively, the Chinese traders behaved in a hooliganistic manner. After that the local authorities behaved with total disregard of human rights when they forced the diplomat to collapse without medicines. The answer to these mistakes is not advising Indian traders to work honestly and legally. The Chinese Govt must, instead, advise its own traders not to assault innocent foreigners and its local Govt to respect human rights. Please get your facts and moral compass right before acting as an arbitrator.

Indians are quite good at arguing and arguing, but for this case, Indians are really behaving as cheaters, and will not be well treated anywhere whether being in China or others. This is a case following many other Indian crimes in China this year alone.

easy to condemn the people involved in this case or any other without knowing the full facts (which are under investigation right now by the Chinese authorities) and based on impressions alone. I don't wish to do that, that's all.

can you stop intruding with your silly comments until you have read the whole piece. Being an Indian and living in Singapore, with majority Chinese, you are still acting like a villager from a remote Indian village who haven't worked or seen Chinese. That is a big shame to you. The comment column here has restriction on no. of characters, so stay put to read the whole piece before you try to jump and show your ignorance of nationalism and patriotism

this should be an issue to be resovled by the court, isn't it? I understand from the report that the businessman are before the court when the diplomat tries to bring them to Shanghai. Why we not allow the court procedure completed? I don't think these businessmen have the diplomat immunity from legal procedures in China

If you cannot refrain from personal comments, don't expect a reply from me. I don't have much respect for people like you who cannot argue a point without maligning someone. You are a far cry from cultured and dignified Indians. I strongly suspect that you are a cowardly Paki, just creating a bad name for India and Indians using the freedom of expression on this site

aurav: tell me which Indian is cultured and dignified. which indian does not malign other indians. which indian is not a chor. which indian is not crafty and deceit others. which indian does not exploit their countrymen especially the under-privilidged and poor. which billionaire indian engaged in charitable and social work like bill gates, warren buffett and the likes. i am a crooked indian and I admit that with sadness and you are no better off than me. why are you so ashamed of being indian and to be a super super one when all are looters and cheaters headed by the world's largest crook - PM singh and now to call others paki

I am very sorry to hear such views of yours. I can assure you that there are millions of honest, dignified and caring Indians. You may not have come across them. I suggest, if you would like to be one of them, to do so and automatically your circles will start including such Indians whom we can feel at home with.
