<Kanwa News March 20th 2003> China's Lanzhou Military Region recently conducted joint combat tactic training in the cold plateau and mountainous regions. After the Afghanistan War, the weapon systems and training in the military region have been greatly reinforced. These forces can be transferred to the front lines quickly after the war starts and then push the front to the outside line immediately.

The exercise is highly mechanized, and the main force involved should be the No.21 Group Army. The weapons made appearance in this exercise included 88B MBT, type 86 (WZ501/BMP1) IFV, 83 Type 152mm SP howitzer, type89 122mm 40-rounds rocket launcher and M17-1 helicopter. The No.21 Group Army includes a No.3 Army Aviation Regiment, which is one of the largest among similar regiments. The exercise has the following characteristics. First of all, it emphasized the importance of fast reaction. For this purpose, Mi17-1 helicopters participated in the operation. Besides, BMP1 IFV and 88B MBT jointly conducted fast movement training. Secondly, it gave special attention to fire power domination training. However, there were no indications that Type 98 BMT had been deployed in Lanzhou Military Region now.

The exercise was also characterized by a focus on battlefield intelligence collection and electronic jamming operation. A special antenna similar to the US vehicle-borne AN/GLQ-3A HF and UHF communication jamming system appeared in the exercise. In addition, the battlefield image transmission system was also used.
