Chinese premier Li Keqiang takes red carpet asread, bestowing largesse as our leader tags along, struggling with his Mandarin

The double doors opened and in walked themost important man in Britain.Quickly followed by David Cameron. 14bn might be loose change to China, but it's a massive trade deal for Britain, andthe prime minister had gone out of his way to give Chinese premier Li Keqiangthe red carpet treatment.

He was relaxed and jokey, everything aChinese leader is not meant to be. It was Cameron who was feeling the strain:spending a couple of days as tour guide and valet doesn't come naturally tohim. He tried to summon one last smile. "When Premier Li was first herefour years ago, he gave my daughter Florencea toy panda," he said. "Now she has grown and the relationshipbetween our countries has grown." You won't hear a more blatant appealthan that. Gimme some pandas. Now. Three if poss, so that we've got one morethan the Scots if they vote for independence.

No pandas were forthcoming, so Camerontried another tack. "It is 30 years since we signed a declaration to handover Hong Kong," he said.

Li responded graciously, as one mightexpect of a colonial governor bestowing largesse on his new dependency. He hadmuch enjoyed meeting the Queen, he said, and was looking forward to"creating huge energy". Presumably a reference to the deal that theFrench-owned Hinkley Point nuclear power station was to be financed withChinese money.

Cameron was still just about holding his ownuntil BBC correspondent Carrie Gracie asked Li a question about Chinese humanrights abuses in Mandarin. At this point, the simultaneous headphonetranslation failed. Li was unbothered as he delivered a lengthy reply, butCameron started to look around anxiously。

Thereafter, there were long delays as thetranslators took centre stage. Despite speaking at breakneck speed, the Chinesetranslations of Cameron's remarks took far longer than the original English."I'm sorry everyone," the translator might have been saying,"but this bloke keeps going on about the EU and other stuff we don't careabout.

As the conference wound up Cameron scowledwhile Li smiled and waved to the press. Welcome to the new world order.

It's a disgrace that we have such ashameful prime minister doing business with the political mafia - Britain usedto at least pretend it was supporting human rights (despite its own abuses),now it doesn't even try... Depressing times and getting worse day by day

And there was no EU flag alongside theBritish flag at the ceremony shown on TV. Mr Li will see that flag everywhereelse he goes in Europe - why not here?

Quite amusing but complete nonsense. I'vejust come back from dinner with Premier Li. He and his wife are fluent inEnglish (she's a Professor of English) and the UKhas been the recipient of more inward investment from China than therest of the EU put together.

Lefties like to run down our country but infact the relationship with Chinais very warm and exports to Chinaare growing very rapidly, at 17% pa. Premier Li said that they had just signeddeals with the UKworth over $30bn.

(InterestinglyLiam Byrne was at the Banquet on the top table, but no Lib Dems).

I love seeing Cameron get the treatment hedeserves .. we can be a local province of the USor a local province of China, that's therealistic choice thanks to decades of privatisation, infrastructure destructionand a total reliance on foreign banks for the wealth of the nation. RealBritish values.

Am I the only one worried about Chineseinvestment in UKnuclear power - maybe they are the only ones daft enough to do it..
