Last year, London Mayor Boris Johnson heralded thejust-completed London 2012 Summer Olympic Games as a triumph for the city and amagnet for tourism and foreign investment. But this open invitation, apparently, didn’t extend to China. Two months prior to the Games, the BritishAmbassador in Beijing, Sebastian Wood, labeled the U.K. “a fortress” topotential Chinese visitors.

This year, the UN World Tourism organizationmarked Chinese tourists as the single biggest source of income in globaltourism: As a group, they spent $102 billion overseas in 2012, more than 30percent more than visitors from other countries. But while a single Schengenvisa enables tourists to gain entry into most countries in the EU, the U.K.requires a separate visa that costs almost twice as much. This, Wood argued, deterred wealthy Chinese tourists from visiting the country, and caused theU.K. to lose significant revenue to European neighbors such as France andGermany.

A key component of the British visit was easingvisa regulations for Chinese visitors. At Peking University, Osborne announcedthe launch of a 24-hour “super priority” service that would fast-track visasfor Chinese business leaders traveling to the U.K. as well as a separateprocess that would allow certain Chinese travel agents to apply for U.K. visasusing the same application as for the Schengen.

Johnson also mentioned the huge income derivedfrom Britain’s 130,000-strong Chinese student population, noting that “Londonhas more Chinese students than any other city on earth, outside China.”Reminding the audience that Harry Potter’s girlfriend was also a Chinesestudent, he added: “Let me make this clear to you and to the whole of China:There is no limit to the number of Chinese who can study in Britain.” Thestatement, given recent events, was striking: Last year the U.K.  announced a policy to reduce annual netimmigration from outside the EU, shortening the length of stay for overseasstudents. And while previous visas offered students the right to seekemployment in the U.K. for two years, now only those who graduate with joboffers can stay. Why, then, is the U.K. suddenly reversing course with China?

China has made significant investments inBritish industry and infrastructure. These include shares in London’swater supply as well as a project to expand Heathrow Airport, the latter worth £800million ($1.28 billion) and expected to create 16,000 jobs.

The U.K. has even eased regulations for Chinesebanks to set up branches in London, relaxing rules brought in as a result ofthe financial crisis that required most foreign banks to set up “subsidiaries”that operate under tighter controls of the Prudential Regulatory Authority(PRA).

Even more contentious is China’s foray intoBritain’s nuclear power industry. During his visit George Osborne announcedthat Chinese state-owned companies would take a minority share in thecontroversial Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in southwest England, thefirst to be constructed in the U.K in 20 years.

While the success of the Sino-British traderelationship hinges on a balance of political tact and strict regulatory checkswith strong accountability, for some, the U.K. government’s latest move signalsthe end to British integrity. Jonathan Mirsky, a former East Asia editor of theTimes writing in the New York Review of Books, sees the new relationship as asell-out, on what he calls “precisely the things that have made Britain great:freedom, democracy and above all, speaking truth to power.”

A little too much controversy surrounding Chinese investments. When you look at the big picture and the numbers, despite the media surrounding Chinese investments, it's relatively small compared to other major countries like the US and the other European countries.
China's GDP is a little over 50% the size of the US, $9 trillion vs $16 trillion. But her cumulative outbound investments is only 10% the size of the US, $500 billion vs $5 trillion. America and Europe's investment in the UK dwarfs that of China's current investment in the UK.
So, really, China has years of catching up to do. The UK is not kowtowing to China, but rather, inviting her to reach her full potential in UK investments.

Absolutely, the U.K. is groveling shamelessly. That's why the U.S. has to rebuild its strength so it doesn't have to do the same. There has to be some opposing force to China or the world faces some dark times.

Dark times?? Hardly.
China is the fastest growing major market in the world, and the Chinese engineering teams can bid 30% lower than Western outfits, and still build quality projects AND make money. That is exactly what the UK needs in infrastructure renewal in order to better compete.
Whatever the West can make, China can make in 5 years at a typical cost down of at least 30%. All consumers around the globe benefits from this boost to living standards due to Made in China.
The West "aided" Africa for 300 years and the natives were poorer after all that time. China went in, and in the last 10-15 years, ALL African nations that actively accepted Chinese investments were growing their economies and bettering the lives of the people.
How can that be dark times?

First of all it's "who is", not "whose". Speak your language properly.
Secondly, we is almost every other person on this planet. WE know that you probably don't check the COO label on every toilet paper product, every toothbrush, every basket of vegetables, every and any phone, TV, or electronic device.
I know this because 90% of all shoes, 85% of all toilets, and something like 80% of all electronic devices are either produced or assembled in China. You are a liar. By default, at least half of the non-food products in your home were Made in China.
