Lúthien Tinúviel

"Farewell sweet earth and northern sky,
for ever blest, since here did lie
and here with lissom limbs did run
beneath the Moon, beneath the Sun,
Lúthien Tinúviel
more fair than mortal tongue can tell.
Though all to ruin fell the world
and were dissolved and backward hurled
unmade into the old abyss,
yet were its making good, for this -
the dusk, the dawn, the earth, the sea -
that Lúthien for a time should be."

The shadow of pain

"His body recovered from his torment and became hale, but the shadow of his pain was in his heart; and he lived to wield his sword with left hand more deadly than his right had been."

The Silmarillion, Chapter 13: Of the Return of the Noldor
The death of Curufin

"Celegorm stirred up his brothers to prepare an assault upon Doriath. They came at unawares in the middle of winter, and fought with Dior in the Thousand Caves; and so befell the second slaying of Elf by Elf. There fell Celegorm by Dior's hand, and there fell Curufin, and dark Caranthir."

The Silmarillion, Chapter 22: Of the Ruin of Doriath

In this version, Curufin is still alive when Maedhros and Maglor find him - and with his last breath, asks if the Silmaril is safe... and Maedhros lies to him to ease his passing to Mandos.

Celegorm and Curufin

This was a collaboration with German Tolkien artist Anke Katrin Eißmann that was a lot of fun to do. We decided we'd illustrate a scene of Celegrom and Curufin in Nargothrond - hers is the one on the right, mine the one on the left.

"Ye have spilled the blood of your kindred unrighteously and have stained the land of Aman. For blood ye shall render blood, and beyond Aman ye shall dwell in Death's shadow. For though Eru has appointed to you to die not in Eä, and no sickness may assail you, yet slain ye may be, and slain ye will be: by weapon and by torment and by grief; and your houseless spirits shall come then to Mandos. There long shall ye abide and yearn for your bodies, and find little pity though all whom ye have slain should entreat for you."

Maedhros is brought before Morgoth

Maedhros, after his capture by Orcs and Balrogs, is brought before the Deep Throne of Morgoth - so close to the Silmarils and yet so far... and unaware yet of the fate that awaits him.

Not an actual scene from the Silmarillion, but Morgoth couldn't have passed over the opportunity to gloat.

Maedhros alone stood aside

"But when they were landed, Maedhros the eldest of his sons, and on a time the friend of Fingon ere Morgoth's lies came between, spoke to Fëanor, saying: 'Now what ships and rowers will you spare to return, and whom shall they bring hither first? Fingon the Valiant?'

Then Fëanor laughed as one fey, and he cried: 'None and none! What I have left behind I count no loss; needless baggage on the road it has proved. Let those that curse my name, curse me still, and whine their way back to the cages of the Valar! Let the ships burn!'

Then Maedhros alone stood aside, but Fëanor caused fire to be set to the white ships of the Teleri."

Alone he set forth

"Then Fingon the Valiant, son of Fingolfin, resolved to heal the feud that divided the Noldor... he dared a deed that is justly renowned among the feats of the princes of the Noldor; alone, without the counsel of any, he set forth in search of Maedhros."

Tulkas the Strong

"But in the midst of the war a spirit of great strength and hardihood came to the aid of the Valar, hearing in the far heaven that there was a war in the Little Kingdom; and Arda was filled with the sound of his laughter. So came Tulkas the Strong, whose anger passes like a mightly wind, scattering clouds and darkness before it, and Melkor fled before his wrath and his laughter."

Chapter 13: Of the Return of the Noldor
A Tapestry of Sorrows

Míriel Serindë, wife of High King Finwë and mother of Fëanor. After giving birth to her son, she was so exhausted that she wished to die, and was the first of the Elves in the Blessed Realm to do so.

When Finwë wished to marry again after a while, his wish was granted under one condition only: As dead Elves can return to their lives and their bodies after a time, Míriel had to declare she would never return to life. Finwë then married Indis of the Vanyar, mother of Fingolfin and Finarfin, thus leading to the breach between the houses of Fëanor and his half-brothers.

Míriel, however, after she had remained in the Halls of Mandos for a while, began to yearn for her body and the needlework she had loved while she was alive. So she was granted leave to join the household of Vairë the Weaver, where she sits still, weaving the high and sad History of her people into tapestries...

This version of the story was taken from the History of Middle-earth series, edited by Christopher Tolkien after his father's death.

"By his deed Fingon won great renown, and all the Noldor praised him; and the hatred between the houses of Fingolfin and Fëanor was assuaged. For Maedhros begged forgiveness for the desertion in Araman; and he waived his claim of kingship over all the Noldor, saying to Fingolfin: 'If there lay no grievance between us, lord, still the kingship would rightly come to you, the eldest here of the house of Finwë, and not the least wise.' But to this his brothers did not all in their hearts agree."

The Ruin of the House of Fëanor

Maedhros and Maglor, after stealing the Silmaril, have just realized that they no longer have a right to them, and they burned their hands. Maglor cast his into the sea; Maedhros chose to end his own life by casting himself into a fiery chasm. Maedhros's fëa (spirit) lingers with his brother before passing on to the Halls of Mandos.

"Father! Are you at last proud of me? For I, who so disappointed you during your life, I who seemingly lacked all of your gifts, am now in the end your perfect Heir. For I too have lead my family to their deaths and my people into disaster, scorning the counsel of those wiser than myself. I too have corrupted my talents, using them to slay my kin, and have warped my fëa into a thing of darkness. And now, like you, I am a spirit of fire, a living flame, consumed by blazing agony. All that remains is to die as you did, casting myself into the Darkness, for I cannot endure the pain of this burning."

Amrod and Amras, sons of Fëanor

Amras and Amrod, the last two sons of Fëanor. For their appearances, I stuck to Tolkien's later writings, which were not incorporated in to the finished version of the Silmarillion, because it'd have meant changes to the entire book Christopher Tolkien didn't want to make.

According to these, both had their mother's red hair, but Amras's darkened as he grew older. Amrod's mother-name was "Umbarto", "Fated", which is father, distressed, changed to "Ambarto." But he himself sealed Amrod's fate - Amrod had not come ashore after the landing in Middle-earth, but planned to return secretly to Aman. Fëanor did not know this and when he burned the ships, his youngest son was burned with them.

Fëanoreans - Family picture

Take a peek into the house of Fëanor when the Noldor still lived in Valinor... I imagine it must have been rather lively at times. Nerdanel, pregnant with Curufin, spots trouble brewing between Caranthir and Celegorm (who seems to have always been rather protective of his dog), Maedhros has just given up concentrating on writing a letter, Maglor demonstrates that poets and artists are always able to retreat into a world completely of their own during the creative process, and Feanor looks in from the smithies and shouts for some quiet. ;)

家庭照一幅
Forgive me, my brother

The scenes that spark my imagination most in the Silmarillion are the ones that aren't there. What did Maglor do after his brother Maedhros had been rescued?

It's never said, but his situation must have been terrible. Until a very short time ago, he had been the second son of a king's son, of a people that was thought immortal, content with making poetry and music. Then, in short succession, the death of his grandfather, the flight of the Noldor, the death of his father, and within the day, the capture of his eldest brother. He was suddenly High King of the Noldor, and ultimately, he must have been responsible for the decision that Maedhros would not be rescued.

And now Fingon had done what he and his brothers hadn't dared... I think that Maglor was loyal enough to swallow his Fëanorean pride and ask to see his brother after his rescue. But I imagine there must have been a terrible guilt on him.
Maglor, son of Fëanor

Maglor is probably one of the saddest characters in the Silmarillion. He was the only one of Fëanor's sons who was ever willing to rescind the Oath of Fëanor but was still bound by it, and even though he's not a character we ever explicitly learn very much about, it is obvious how much he suffered under the terrible deeds he committed himself for the Oath. I wanted to convey the compassion and the pain and deep sorrow that is Maglor... and try out a green colour scheme for once.
Fingon rescues Maedhros

Fingon rescues Maedhros from Thangorodrim. I had drawn this scene a dozen times ten years ago, I think; in this version, I'm aware Maedhros looks a mite too fit to have been tortured for fifty years. Maybe one day, I'll do a more realistic one.
