These ships were originally to have been fitted with 15.9" (403mm)guns as in the Bismark class.
Hitler demanded that this be changed to 16.53" (420mm) as the U.S.N. were doing in their new battleships.
He later (1941) ordered these ships completed with 31.5" (800mm) guns!!
His naval staff convinced him that this would be impossible to do and he relented back to 16.53"(420mm) .
For the 1943 H-42-44 design projects (the last design project before complete cancellation) this was increased to
18.9" guns with the same secondary layout as the original design.
The H-41 design was the last design intended to be built
H42 to H44 designs were mere projects to calculate the size of a BB armored enough to withstand
the most modern bombs. They were NOT intended for completion.
