RPV and Helicopter Fueling and Storage (1983-1992)
contributed by Dick Landgraff

The fuel stowed in a 500 gallon bladder in one of the aft gun tubs was Motor Gasoline (Mogas) for the RPV.
The bladder was also in a dolly type carriage that could be jettisoned quickly in case of fire.
JP-5 for the helos was stowed in new tanks below 3rd deck on the starboard side aft.
The space originally held two cylindrical tanks of Mogas that were cut up and removed.
However, the two tanks on the port side remained as day tanks for JP-5.
Helo maintenance was operated out of the old movie booth on centerline, main deck just aft of turret III.
Helo ops were controlled by a new control station built on 02 level and over the top of turret III.
Helo stowage was intended to be on the long ramp forward of the helo deck on the starboard side.
Port side was intended for a boat trailer stowing two motor whaleboats.
A new boat boom was added to the port side of the after superstructure to handle those boats.
RPV's were stored in hut-like cannisters and assembled out on deck.
Plans were drawn for a semi-permanent hangar where RPV maintenance and assembly could be done out of the weather.

The North Carolina experienced severe longitudal vibrations on her builder's trials. Many different configurations of propellors and shaft vibration dampers were tried with some success.
She recieved her nickname "Showboat" from her year long stay at New York Navy yard correcting the problem.
She was seen so many times in New York Harbor that it looked like she was showing off.
She was damaged by a torpedo fired from the Japanese sub 1-19. Sep.15/42 (the only torpedo damage ever to a modern U.S.battleship.)

Belt 13.5" Class "A" side (10.5' wide)
tapered to 8" at bottom (6.5' wide)
1.3125" cement used as a cushion to seat the belt to the hull plate
Hull 0.375"-1" HTS
Deck weather deck--0.25" HTS
upper deck--0.5"-0.3"-0.25" medium steel
main deck--1.25" HTS- 0.3" medium steel
armored deck--1.75" STS on 1.75" nickel-steel
3rd deck--1" STS laminated to 0.5" medium construction steel
Forward Transverse Bulkhead 13.5"
Longitudinal Bulkhead

Funnel Uptakes 3" criss-cross cylindrical nickel-steel bars
Conning Tower 16" sides-N/A roof

The anti-torpedo side system consisted of six vertical bulkheads extending from the ships bottom to the third deck level,
the outer one being the outer hull itself of 0.375" HTS except for the 0.8125" HTS layer behind the Class "A" belt at
the top of this anti-torpedo system, then a 4' space, then a 0.375" HTS bulkhead, then a 3' space, then a 0.75" HTS bulkhead, then another 3' space, then another 0.75" HTS bulkhead, then yet another 3' space, then yet another 0.75" HTS
bulkhead, then a 4' space, and then the final bulkhead up against the outer wall of the boiler room, which was 1" STS for
the upper 12' (splinter bulkhead), 0.35" HTS for the next 7' or so going down, then 0.4" HTS for the next 7' or so going
down, and then increasing to 0.625" HTS to the ship's bottom. All of these spaces in the anti-torpedo system were cut
in the transverse direction by 0.375" HTS watertight bulkheads at regular intervals.
Other than the vertical girders holding the bulkheads apart at intervals there were no internal decks within the anti-torpedo system spaces so liquid could fill them from top to bottom, if desired, with no obstructions.
Normally the three middle 3' spaces were kept liquid filled and the outer and inner 4' spaces were kept empty voids unless counter-flooding had to be done.

hit by torpedoes and 2 bombs at about 0810 hours Dec.7/41.
blew up and sank
The Arizona was too badly damaged at Pearl Harbor to be rebuilt
as she had been hit by at least two torpedoes and two bombs.
One of which penetrated the forecastle and detonated a ready use black powder locker
setting off a chain-reaction which exploded the forward magazine.
She was declared a constructive loss.
Most of her tophamper was cut away and all but the badly damaged front turret was removed for use in other ships.
It was decided to leave her where she was and make her into a memorial
for all the 1,177 men killed and the 945 men still entombed inside her.
She was dedicated as such in 1962.

Both ships were extensively reconstructed 1929-31
