注意到最近关于永兴岛机场扩建的新闻，很多报道把扩建机场说成新建机场。一个简单的错误如何以讹传讹的扩散开来？推测，首先可能是国内媒体英文版把扩建弄成新建了，然后类似AFP这种新闻批发商到处贩卖，最后很多外媒都说是在西沙新建机场了。

先看国内媒体的英文报道，找到了两个，标题一样，但是注释内容不一样：
1. 第一个是10.8号的中新网，注释中错误的说成“新建跑道” （"a newly-built airstrip"）

2. 第二个是10.9号的人民网，只有标题给出中性的描述，没说新建也看不出是扩建，但不知道的很可能会认为是新建。http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/n/2014/1009/c90882-8792271.html
3. 虽然外媒纷纷表示“据新华社”，可惜没有搜到新华社的报道出处。

再看外媒报道：
1. The Diplomat  "据AFP据新华社"，”新建“跑道：
"On Wednesday AFP reported, citing an article from Xinhua News Agency, that China had finished the construction of a “newly built” runway on Woody (Yongxing) Island“
还好这个作者调查了一下在文中指出了这个问题：
It therefore seems likely that China has not built a completely new airstrip but rather finished extending the existing one.
