I think that choosing to disqualify them is best. We all know that it most likely wasn't the players choices, but their coaches and the people even above them, to carry out these strategies to play poorly on purpose. If you saw the matches, it was obvious they were doing this, as they should have been playing like some of the best in the world. We don't wish that the players have to suffer because of their coaches decisions. Its clearly not of good intentions to play your worst, to get the upper hand, and i don't think they were just saving their strength for later, and it's obvious now.

While what the athletes did was morally reprehensible, it is unfair to only fault them and not the system. This round robin was bound to invite this kind of strategy; I have no idea why the BWF was so appalled. It either shows a total lack of foresight or a deliberate attempt to stop the best teams from reaching the top.

Yes, the athletes should be playing their best to excite an audience, but this is certainly not the main reason for any athlete to work so hard and sacrifice so much (some injuring their bodies permanently) to reach the Olympics (especially given the many empty seats in London 2012).

The athletes worked extremely hard in order to win the competition. They would be stupid to put their best out in order to hurt their chances of winning in the end. It's an unfortunate part of strategizing to win a competition, which is part of the game.

I don't understand why people consider this cheating. Cheating is giving yourself an unfair advantage over your competitors - if at all, deliberately underperforming in a match is the opposite of cheating. As many readers pointed out, this strategy is not unique in badminton and is common in soccer, basketball, baseball, and many other sports that haven much bigger audiences and corporate sponsorship.

In my opinion, disqualifying the players was too harsh. The right course of action would've been to give them a formal warning and reprimand, and then change the rules for the next games to avoid this scenario in the future.

The spectators who booed got their unintended consequences. Now, they get to see second ranked teams play the finals for the medals.

The 'best effort' rule applies to physical AND mental effort. And in round robin play, it is very smart to save your energy for important matches. People who compare one time events for medals (like marathons and swimming) are comparing apples and oranges. You cannot fall back in arspeed race hoping to win a medal, you will not. According to the badminton rules, you MUST because if you play the preliminaries to the max you have nothing left for the finals. Too bad for the spectators, but they should complain to the rule makers, not about smart players.

The organizers made mistakes and they blamed the players for their mistakes. Do you win a gold medal after winning one badminton game? Do you win a medal after winning two games? Three games? No, the answer is that you don't win the gold medal until you win the last game, and it's the last game count.

Now use long distance running as an analogy. If you are an elite runner, but you don't try to get ahead of the pack and stay there, can people accuse you of cheating and not giving your 100% percent effort in the first K, the second K, or the third K? No, you want to preserve energy and stay steady. Maybe your teammate will be a coy to run ahead and exhaust your opponents. Is that cheating?

You don't win the gold medal for being first in the first K, the second K or the third K. You win it by being first at the end of the race. No one should force you to exert all your energy to be the first all the time. That is unreasonable. Unless race organizers make rule changes to make every single K count.

Perhaps they should have similiar seeded systems like in Tennis, Volleyball, and etc where the strongest team play against the weakest team, thus eliminating them. If you are of a higher seed, you will play with a weaker team, thus giving teams an incentive to win.

So many people are blinded by their romantic view of athletes "giving it their all" to realize that the round-robin style play implemented by the BWF to determine qualification doesn't actually reward athletes for "giving it their all." It penalizes them for it. For the Chinese badminton players, this was their situation: if you win the match, you play for gold or bronze. If you lose, you play for gold or silver. Any rule structure that allows this scenario is inherently broken. Athletes SHOULD be rewarded for giving it their all and they deserve a rule system to do this. Either redraw brackets after the preliminary rounds or play straight knockout from the start.

They have played hard to get the qualification for the next round without the necessary requirement of winning the last group game . No rules are violated . If they are kicked out , what about other games in football . It is not hard to see that many teams will choose to face easier opponent . Please look at Japanese female football team , they tried to lose the game to avoid moving to another city , and relatively easier game .

For theses chinese badminton girls , they just want to keep their energy and do their best in finals , are they really wrong ?

For an olympian, winning a gold medal, not winning every game, is his/her ultimate goal. Most accolades (along with all kinds of material rewards) are given to those who win a medal, not those who do their best to win every game. The end-result is considered the aggregate reflection of the long process including hard work and smart strategies in individual games and in the entire tournament. Top competitors in the prreliminary heats in track and swimming work in the same way the disqualified badminton players. Difference lies merely in how obvious such strategic moves look.

The new system recently introduced at the Olympics is as much at fault as the players. The ultimate goal for a player is too reach the top, and choosing the path to the top is the right of the players, as far as they are playing within the rules. If the players can be disqualified because of this, should the officials who designed this new system be fired as well?

How do they cheat in a badminton game? They win or they lose. If they wanted to lose, it was up to them, not the umpire or the spectators. They chose their options for their own reasons. They were at the group stage? Who said they had to win every single game during group stage? They play badminton with not only their physical abilities but also their brains. When they felt they didn't need to spend extra energy, they could conserve for later, more important rounds. Moreover, when they decided to participate the olympics with injuries, the olympic spirit had already shown in them.

It is time for the badminton players to form a new organization and throw out the authoritatian and anachrostic WBF. They get scant respect as players and are treated like children, being summoned and chastised despite being the world class atheltes that they are. No one paid tickets to watch the umpires - we come to admire the athletic prowess of the badminton players. Shame also to the IOC for not calling the WBF on this type of narrow-mindedness.

This became ridiculous because both sides tried to lose. But is it any better when only one side is trying to lose (and thus shielded from being glaringly obvious)?

If pretense is wrong, then we should also penalize baseball players in the following situations:

- Pitchers throws at a hitter while pretending he just lost it.

- Runner runs wildly into second base, pretending he doesn't know how to slide properly, when his real intention is to break up a double play.

- Runner crashes into catcher at home, pretending it's a natural collision, when he is intentionally trying to jar the ball loose.

These are accepted traditions in baseball, but it is still dishonest in the pure sense. Baseball was never meant to be a contact sport, yet to this date we accept crashes at home plate as normal. As in the badmington case, only rule changes would facilitate more honest sportsmanship by taking away the incentive to pretend.

Very true, but you have to understand these players dont make these sacrifices in game, to lose the actual game. The comparison isn't correct though as they aren't trying to lose the actual baseball game, only making play, and this is the Olympics.

And then force them to play the very players they did not want to meet in the elimination round, before they can advance.

The new system recently introduced at the Olympics is as much at fault as the players. The ultimate goal for a player is too reach the top, and choosing the path to the top is the right of the players, as far as they are playing within the rules. If the players can be disqualified because of this, should the officials who designed this new system be fired as well?

If Usain Bolt , like the US athletes, were to run at 9.8s in the heat yet got thru' to the semi, 9.7s in the semifinal but still managed to get into the final, would he be disqualified with us knowing very well he had NOT given his best? It's strategy to save power in your tank to WIN in the final which is what ALL Olympians are there for in the first place, to win the war, not the battle. Some even commented Bolt STILL hadn't given his BEST in Beijing so as to allow room for himself to break his own record here in London!
