Just whenyou think Greece's financial implosion can't get any worse, a new wrinkleemerges to further frighten observers worried about the country's prospects. OnTuesday, the New York Times warned thatdwindling tax proceeds could quickly leave the country out of cash, andheadlines continue to blare that Greece's "agony"won't end with new elections on June17. Greek voters face a choice between harsh austerity measures being imposedin exchange for a financial bailout or facing the bleak possibility of leavingthe eurozone entirely.
Thirty percent of Athens shops have closed. On some streets, half the shops are shuttered. The commercial sector is in the grip of a closureepidemic which is spreading like a contagious disease. And in the heart ofcentral Athens, a stone's throw from the city'sglorious ancient sites, the tragic face of today's Greece is on display. Here, we lookat the human toll taken by the country's shocking downturn in a series ofphotographs taken in Athenson May 22-29, 2012.

The last Greek election, held on May6, left the country without a majority in parliament, as voters refused tosupport either of the two traditionally largest parties. After nine days oftalks failed to produce a coalition government, power-sharing talks collapsed. This new political crisis has forced current President Karolos Papoulias toappoint an interim government until the June 17 election.

What is thedifference between Athensand the other big cities of the West, based on these photos? On the other Westnations there are no poor people or drug addicts? It is obvious that thesephotos are the exception and not the rule.

Economy = humanrights. Deng is right, regardless of black or white cat, the one that catches mouse is a good cat. Same thing for political system. What is human rights, democracy or freedom when people are living in povertystruggling to met end need?

What did Iceland do withthe bankers?  Did the prime minister once work for Goldman Sachs?(goldensack, they get the gold you get the sack) Financial tyranny.  All forthe well connected!
首相好像曾为高盛(高盛就是他们又高又盛你就又矮又搓(golden sack, they get the gold you get the sack))工作么?

This is reallyan unfair article. And definitely NOT THE WHOLE PICTURE! What you see on thephotos is only a small part of the city. The rest is totally different. If I'mnot mistaken, you can see squalid and poor neighbourhoods in most big cities ofthe world. If you want to do serious journalism, you have to show the otherside of the story, too. The beautiful, rich, clean and full of history andtourists areas of Athens.Indeed this is a very cheap article...
TasosToumpanakis
RedNati If you are Greek then you mustbe living on your own bubble world. If you are not, then you are eithermisinformed or you simply do not respect what the Greek people are goingthrough. We are talking about a country where the suicides have an increase of400%; about a country where the basic wage went almost to half in 2 years, butthe prices for goods have increased 35% (more expensive than Berlin); about acountry that works MOST from EVERY Euro-zone country (go to Eurostat, you needto be informed a bit). I could go on and on and on. I dont know whose cheaper, that kind of opinions or the countries that like neo-fascists try to squeezeevery little nickel from Greek people... Actually, both are very sad.

the point isthat showing just pics like these, the whole world believes that we are at alllike that.... this is not true, this is not greece.... yes, we have problems, suicides, unemployment has raised, fascism has raised as well but this is NOTthe whole picture....

My wife andI have traveled Greece ayear ago, and we were shocked to discover how undeveloped thecountry was. Particularly the southern part of the Peloponnesus, but also the north.
In mosttowns (even the large ones) there was not a single trafficlight. Main arteries between major hubs had just a single lane, and manyof the roads were in a horrible condition. Only outside Athens did we see any industrial complexes, and even these were in part dilapidated. In most villages we passedthrough, there were no young people to be seen. Only old folks sitting outsidetheir houses, doing nothing.
And you couldclearly see the lack of tourists, even though it was June. Almost all thehotels we stayed in had a very low occupancy. In one place (Lefkada, if Irecall correctly), we were the only people in the hotel.
Emptyrestaurants, with all tables set, their owners standing outside, hoping someonemight come in. Empty shops. Deserted villages. It was truly heartbreakingto see.
The scenery was,of course, magnificent. But the country seemed neglected.
TheodorePananos
LeonidGeiler In 2011 there was a record in theGreek tourist industry with a visit of 16 millions tourists (Greek population11 millions). I suppose you didn't visit tourist areas....
On the otherhand I agree that the infrastructures should be better.

If democracy isresponsible for the present day in Greece, we can still think of abetter political philosophy. Or may be a better theocracy.

Living in Athens, I am shocked tosay that the photos are so relevant to the actual daily life in the city.Sadstate indeed , hopefully it will be reversed soon.

you could takethese images any week in the uS or frankly any country. Starting with the imageof a heroin addict is sensationalist and cheap. Poor work from FP.

I won't press alike button. That's propaganda. These pics are not depicting the real picture. One can travel to almost every country and make pictures of some drug addictsand homeless people. Apart from the center of Athens, that I don't like, Athensis a beautiful city with lots of green in it. Beside that, Greece is not only Athens.
Peter Desilets
Whether New York City, Athensor elsewhere, inequality exists and it is sometimes manifested in drug use. ForAmerican apologists of austerity policies, it's a dog eat dog world. For therest the world, America'sunremorseful and fraudulent manipulation of financial markets is a mad dogtrying to swallow more than its full stomach can chew......

So Karen, Americawants to impose its drug use template on Athens,Paris, London, Madrid, Rome?Next, there will a suggestion of an NFL expansion team in Athens to boost thecity's economy, perhaps even a stadium modeled on the L.A. Coliseum...it's aselection of photos attempting to represent Greece's reality much like your ownDorothea Lange and other FSA photographers did so dramatically during The GreatDepression...you remember The Great Depression?
Evi Ruso-Dragoumis
Kaan, perhaps welike that the pictures shows a facet of Greeceto people ourside Greecethat did not exist only a few years ago! I live in Athens, and I have seen it go from bad toworse day by day. Athens is not New York, or LA. A fewyears back, there were only a few known spots in the city with heroin addicts. Now there are hundreds in several central squares of the city. Yes, somethingis very rotten in Athens, and the country needs help!
EviRuso-Dragoumis
Just referringto the drug problem. Not even mentioning the soup kitchens that can't keep upor people living in squalid conditions, whole other story.

Thomas, thanksfor the 'kind' opportunity, with permission of wise Greek friends of mine, Iwant to add the following: During my years in Europe,I witnessed some people causing artificial problems at work to get fired, andthen spending their unemployment aid on drugs, taking advantage of workingGreek people. I witnessed racist's hate towards LEGAL immigrants who do jobsthat natives don't want to do in the first place. I witnessed them coming towork at 10, sleeping all morning, still ask for a siesta time after the meal, and want to leave around 17, and then blaming their politicians and foreignersand even tourists, for their problems. So, I know about lazyness, I know aboutracism, I know about selfishness and irresponsibility, I used to live in amediterranean country!! Those I observe, they don't make me a racist... Youtell me please, what do they make them?
Kaan Connors
I also witnessedthe difference in treatment between the government offices of the U.S.and some shitty mediterranean country, I have seen the 'civilization andmanners' in the first one and ‘inferiority complex and xenophobia’ in thesecond… So, please keep your teachings for your own people, I am already filledup with the hypocrisy over there...
