Unbelievable. Both South Koreaand India have their presidential elections in 2012, which are respectivelyAsia's fourth largest economy and the world's most populous democracy. And theEconomist omits the leadership contests (which, by the way, are happening inthe midst of a great political turmoil) in these two countries?

Yes, India's presidentialelection will be held in 2012.
BUT the president is afigurehead in the parliamentary system followed by India. The prime minister isthe real head of the government following a general election, held every 5 years, the next one due in 2014.
In the current situation SoniaGandhi (the head of the Congress Party) is the real power behind the primeminister, but her party nevertheless has to win re-election for her to continuein her position.
