High Radiation Severely Hinders Emergency Work to Cool Japanese Plant

日本某专家讲堆上100尺的辐射量达到250millisievert/hour。

I have worked in the nuclear industry for over 30 years and for once I can say the media is downplaying the risk. Japan needs to treat this as a war. People will have to be sent into the plume with the expectation that they could die. This is a job for the military. If you attack a defended city you just know that deaths are going to happen and you accept it. This should be treated as a war. Time is running out.

It seems to me that we've all been duped. Until the BP disaster, and now the massive nuclear power plant disaster, we held a false sense of security that the people who run these things knew what to do if a catastrophic event occured. Instead we see the people in charge saying "lets try this", and "well that didn't work, so lets try this instead". They're clueless, just as the BP executives were clueless.

We now know that if water cannot be continuously poured onto these radioactive rods, a meltdown begins. And we now know that it is entirely possible for the cooling system to fail, and for all backup generators to fail. We now know that not one company operating nuclear power plants has a fail safe plan in place to keep these rods cooled. If there was such a feasible plan, they would have shared this information with the Japanese. President Obama placed a moratorium on deep offshore drilling until the industry could demonstrate that "they knew what they were doing." I think he should declare the same for the American nuclear power industry.

sorry, have to restart my computer,[:a1:]

So the Japanese government ceded control, and the flow of information, to the utility company. Then the US scientists went to Japan and reported the amount of radiation was much higher than originally reported. Actually, France said it first, but for some reason the US statement had more affect.

The US did the same thing during the BP oil spill. We ceded control - and information - to BP. Then multiple scientists/organizations went to the media and said the amount of oil spewing into the Gulf was far greater than BP claimed it was.
I hope the rest of the world learns from this. Two of the wealthiest and most powerful countries were bamboozled by corporations in the wake of a disaster. Let there not be a third.

Perhaps a little perspective is important. More than 400,000 people have been left homeless in northern Japan, 2 million households are without power, and 1.4 million households are without water. They are running out of food, medicine, and fuel. The elderly are starting to die at the shelters. Please let us focus on the humanitarian efforts. I think that it is irresponsible for the NY Times to focus so much on reporting the nuclear crisis when there are bigger problems at hand.
