David Davies,

British swimmer collapses with exhaustion after winning 10km silver - then throws bottle of water over Chinese official

British swimmer David Davies collapsed with exhaustion today afterwinning silver in the gruelling 10km open water marathon - despitegoing off course in the race.
Davies had to be put onto a stretcher as soon as he emerged from thewater at the Shunyi Rowing Park but made a speedy recovery beforerowing with an official.
The Welshman, 23, reacted with fury when a Chinese woman man-handledhim as he was talking to the press and threw a bottle of water over her.

Spent: Britain's David Davies lies motionless at the water's edge

Officials had been harassing him and trying to steer him towards themedal ceremony. He took offence and told one belligerent aide: 'Willyou shut up, please!'
The officials failed to obey the swimmer's request and, after moreharassment, he threw the contents of his water bottle at one of thewomen crowding around him.
David then abruptly stopped his press conference, which came after athrilling race in which he looked set for gold until he went off coursein the final few metres.
The Dutchman, Maarten van der Weijden, took advantage of his mistake and made a push for the final line to deny the Briton.
Van der Weijden's victory was all the more poignant, given his return to swimming after battling and beating leukaemia.

Aid: Chinese officials help the swimmer onto a stretcher and below, he recovers in the back of an ambulance

Davies, who finished sixth in the 1500 metres pool race last week, was full of praise for his opponent and appeared happy enough with hissecond place.
He said: 'Maarten's had a cancer battle in the past and almost hadto give up the sport. It's almost like a Lance Armstrong story.

'He's a complete gentleman and a great ambassador for the sport andhe's Olympic champion now. I said to him at the end that I was reallyproud of him.

'He's a really tough competitor, his story's amazing and one that can inspire people. What he has achieved is phenomenal.'

The Briton's silver medal means he has taken a place on the podiumat successive Olympics after picking up a bronze in the 1500m freestylein Athens four years ago.

Thriller: Davies (Number 10) and his rivals atthe start of the race and below, the tight finish as he holds offGerman Thomas Lurz to come second

'This was the hardest two hours of my life,' he said today. 'It'sone thing to get to the top of an Olympic sport or to get to the podium.
'But to stay focused for another four years and try to stay at thetop of your sport - especially in the endurance events that I do - it'sreally tough and that's probably what I'm most proud of at the moment, that I kept at it for the last four years.'
He added: 'At the end I didn't know what was going on, I was delirious and my head was spinning, I just wanted it so bad.

'It was all a bit of a blur and to go off on the stretcher was a bit mad. Still, I've got something to show for it.'
Davies revealed the rough-house tactics used by some of theswimmers. He said: 'They were swimming all over the top of me - I felta bit violated to be honest.

'My goggles got hit, I had a foot in my mouth and got struck by elbows - but I did try to give back as much as I was getting.'

Respect: Davies hugs gold medallist Dutchman Maarten Van Der Weijden who beat leukaemia before returning to swimming

Russian world champion Vladimir Dyatchin got disqualified whileGerman soldier Thomas Lurz, the former world champ, repeatedly tried tointimidate Davies with rough stuff.

'Maybe I'm just too nice a guy,' he mused afterwards. 'Perhaps Ishould go back home and start hanging around with the ruffians!'
With his water-chucking anger a few minutes later, perhaps he'salready started taking the role of bad guy before Hyde Park and theSerpentine in 2012.

'I definitely want to do that one,' he said. 'Hopefully I'll have learned to swim in a straight line by then.'http://www.anti-cnn.com/forum/cn/thread-92657-1-1.html
