US to field 600 soldiers for Balikatan 2008

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Feb. 8(PNA)-- Some American 600 soldiers will participate in Balikatan 2008, the annual Republic of the Philippines-U.S. bilateral military humanitarian assistance and training activity scheduled from February 18 to March 3.

In Central, Western Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago, the combined Philippine and US armed forces will conduct approximately 23 humanitarian assistance projects.

US Ambassador Kristie A. Kenny said "There will be no military exercises or war games conducted in Mindanao or in Sulu."

"The AFP/U.S. teams will offer free medical, dental and veterinary care. They will also construct and repair schools and other community infrastructures in areas of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago that are in great need of assistance.

The majority of the 600 U.S. personnel are construction engineers and medical specialists. They will be working side-by-side with their AFP counterparts who will be in charge of all projects.

"These humanitarian assistance and training activities will enable our soldiers to get to know each other, train together, and provide assistance in communities where the need is greatest," said Kenney.

"True to the meaning of the word balikatan, Americans and Filipinos are shouldering the load together to help the greatest possible number of people in need," she added.

Balikatan 2008 will be the 24th annual event of its kind held under the auspices of the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) and Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA).

In Zamboanga, Retired General Edilberto Adan met with officials of the Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) last Monday to discuss the participation of Filipino soldiers in the Balikatan.

Gen. Adan who is also the undersecretary for the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) briefed military officials in Wesmincom on the finer points of the VFA.

His visit coincided with the Monday Command Comference conducted by Wesmincom Commander Lt. Gen. Nelson Allaga at the headquarters in this city. (PNA)
