Not much noise over jet noise                                                                                                                                                Langley's new Raptor may be louder, but the fighter jets aren't leaving a larger noise footprint on the Peninsula.
With its engines pushing out nearly 30,000 more pounds of thrust,Langley Air Force Base's new F-22A Raptor fighter jets can be louderthan the F-15 Eagles.

But according to a recently released Air Force report, the noise footprint left in the region by the jets hasn't changed much.

Fewer jets are flying fewer sorties out of Langley, and Air Forceofficials have worked with the Federal Aviation Administration to allowthe Raptors to climb higher faster - bringing the noise with them.

Langley officials presented these findings at a public meeting Tuesdaynight at the York County Library's branch in Tabb. City and countyofficials were briefed last week.

The Air Installation Compatible Use Report aimed to promote safe usesof the land around Langley and to encourage compatible growth withneighboring municipalities. It was compiled, in part, because Langleyis now home to two Raptor squadrons, the service's newest fighter. Thelast time Langley compiled such a report was in 1997, when the primaryflying mission was with the Eagle.

The couple dozen residents who attended the meeting from affectedcommunities - York County, Poquoson, Newport News and Hampton - voicedfew noise complaints.

"The only time I hear about noise (from constituents) is aftertouch-and-gos at Patrick Henry airport," said Sheila Noll, a YorkCounty supervisor. To date this year, Langley has received 16 noisecomplaints and only eight were about Langley planes.

The compatible use report also aimed to examine the "accident potentialzones." Most of the danger areas are on the base itself, over the wateror in a small portion of Hampton.

Accidents are rare - Langley pilots have flown 186,000 accident-freehours - and are usually confined to the areas around the end of therunways.

Other than a mobile home park, golf course, Thomas Nelson CommunityCollege and a 24-screen movie theater, there hasn't been a lot ofbuild-up in these zones. Laura Yates, Langley's community planner, saidthe base and the city work closely together to prevent businesses andresidences encroaching on Langley's space. In the early 1990s, Hamptonofficials and Langley's commander of the base's 1st Fighter Wing wenthead-to-head when development was approved within the crash zones.

Langley is also working with the other localities as part of a JointLand Use Study group to ensure the Air Force base is a partner in anybuilding plan that could affect the flying mission.

Yates said the rule is building anything 200-feet tall or talleranywhere within five miles of Langley could pose a hazard to flying. Also building structures that emit light, attract birds or releasesubstances into the air could pose problems.

The report suggested localities adopt zoning ordinances andneighborhood regulations that encourage compatibility with Langley'sflying mission. It recommended incorporating the report suggestionsinto city and county comprehensive plans and adopting building codesthat require sound-dampening buildings in flight zones.

In return, Langley officials have already implemented, among otherprocedures, "quiet hours," primarily flying between 6 a.m. and 10:30p.m. Airmen will also be installing "hush houses," or sound dampeninghangars where airmen can rev jet engines as part of testing andmaintenance. And pilots will continue to take off toward the water, andnot over homes and businesses, as often as possible.

30,000 more pounds of thrust?:o    F119 15880公斤,大约35000磅,F100 早期 11340公斤,大约25000磅。
