Britain's top judge Tuesday warned HongKong of the need for "eternal vigilance" to safeguard its libertiesas China looks set to take a hardline stance at discussions this week onelection reforms in the city.

英国首席法官周二警告香港要永远的保持警惕以保护自己的自由权利，因为中国将在本周的香港选举改革的讨论上采取强硬立场。

David Neuberger's comments come as China'slegislature meets to decide how Hong Kong's next leader will be chosen, withpublic discontent in the former British colony at its highest for years overperceived interference by Beijing.

Neuberger, who also sits part-time on HongKong's Court of Final Appeal, said he could see no evidence that judicialindependence had been eroded.

"If I felt that the independence ofthe judiciary in Hong Kong was being undermined then I would either have tospeak out or I would have to resign as a judge," he said. "But... Idetect no undermining of judicial independence."

“如果我感觉到香港的司法独立正受到削弱的话，我就会大声的讲出来，或者我会辞去法官的职务。但是目前来说，这种情况还没发生。”他说。
Speaking at the Hong Kong ForeignCorrespondents' Club, he however stressed: "I enthusiastically subscribeto the notion that the price of liberty is eternal vigilance."
