In 2012, the BBC produced a series of maps based on analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US-based think tank.
The ISW based their work on reports from human rights and opposition activists, as well as from the official Syrian Arab News Agency (Sana) and international journalists.
The map above, produced by the Syria Needs Analysis Project (SNAP), is based on a combination of reports compiled by the UN Department for Safety and Security (UNDSS), who have staff in Syria, together with other sources.

政府军占领霍姆斯只是时间问题，南部的叛军也不用考虑。总体来说就是从阿勒颇往南都是政府军控制区，阿勒颇往北和东都是自由区占领区。政府占领60%左右的领土

一支英勇叙武装部队今天在达利亚在追剿恐怖分子组织时发现了恐怖分子的300米长的地下道并配备电力，恐怖分子用于储藏武器弹药以及运输。

During hunting terrorists in Daraya in Damascus Countryside, an army unit discovered a three hundred - meter -long tunnel to the south of Sharida Square.
An official source told SANA reporter that the tunnel is equipped with electricity and wide enough for the passage of a motorbike, adding that the terrorists were using it to transfer and store weapons and ammunition.
The source added that an army unit killed seven terrorists near al-Furn roundabout in the city of Daraya and destroyed their weapons and ammunition.
