Beijing—Beijingwill establish a military garrison on a group of disputed islands in the WestPhilippine Sea (South China Sea), China’s defense ministry said Monday, a movelikely to provoke further tensions with its neighbors.
The troops will operate from Sansha in the Paracel Islands, one oftwo archipelagos in the West Philippine Sea that are claimed by both China andVietnam.
The garrison, approved by the Central Military Commission, “willbe responsible for the Sansha area national defense mobilization and reserveforces activities”, the defense ministry said on its website.
中国北京报道——中国国防部周一表示，中国将在南海的一系列争议岛屿上部署军事守备部队，此举将很有可能激化它和周边邻国的紧张局势。
守备部队将隶属办公驻地在西沙群岛的三沙市，西沙群岛是南海两大群岛之一，中国和越南同时宣称对该群岛拥有主权。
该守备部队由中央军委批准设立，中国国防部在其官方网站表示，“主要负责三沙市辖区国防动员和民兵预备役工作”。


The ministry did not say when the garrison would be established,but the move to station troops on the Paracels is likely to provoke Hanoi’sire.
Beijing’s move last month to designate Sansha as itsadministrative center for the Paracels and the Spratly Islands prompted a raredemonstration Sunday in the Vietnamese capital against China’s territorialassertions.
China and South Vietnam once administered different parts of theParacels but after a brief conflict in 1974 Beijing took control of the entiregroup of islands. Vietnam holds several of the larger Spratly Islands.
China says it owns much of the West Philippine Sea, while thePhilippines, Taiwan, Brunei and Malaysia each claim portions.

In June, the state-backed China National Offshore Oil Corporationannounced it was welcoming bids to explore oil blocks in the disputed waters, aweek after Vietnam adopted a law placing the Spratlys under its sovereignty.
A July 13 meeting of the Association of Southeast Nations broke upwithout a joint statement for the first time in 45 years because members couldnot agree on how to refer to China’s behavior in the disputed waters.
The countries are drafting a “code of conduct” to try to overcomethe rift.
