A powerful flare erupted from the sun Thursday (Jan. 19), unleashing a plasma wave that may supercharge the northern lights for skywatchers in high latitudes this weekend.

The solar flare occurred at about 11:30 am EST (1600 GMT) and touched off a massive solar explosion — known as a coronal mass ejection — aimed at Earth, space weather experts and officials said. The charged particles from the sun explosion should reach Earth by Saturday night (Jan. 21), and could amp up northern lights displays when they hit the upper atmosphere.

"Forecasters say strong geomagnetic storms are possible when the cloud arrives during the late hours of Jan. 21st. High-latitude (and possibly middle-latitude) sky watchers should be alert for auroras this weekend," the skywatching website Spaceweather.com announced in an alert.

Several space telescopes recorded photos and video of the solar flare, including NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). [Photo and video of the solar flare]

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center maintained by NOAA, Thursday's solar flare erupted from an active sunspot group called Region 1401. Another solar hotspot, called Region 1402, is also fired off a flare, the center reported.

Auroras occur when charged particles from the sun interact with Earth's upper atmosphere, releasing visible light in the process. The particles are funneled toward Earth's polar regions by the planet's magnetic field, with the northern auroral displays known as the aurora borealis, or northern lights. The southern counterpart is called the aurora australis, or southern lights.

Thursday's solar flare rated as a powerful M2-class sun storm on the scale used by astronomers to measure flare strength. M-class storms are powerful, but mid-range, types of solar flares. They fall between the weaker C-class flares and the most powerful X-class solar storms, which can pose a threat to satellites and astronauts in orbit, cause widespread communications interference and damage infrastructure on Earth when aimed directly at the planet.

SDO mission scientists have said that sunspot group 1401 has been unleashing solar flares almost daily as the sun's rotation slowly turned the solar hotspot toward Earth in recent days. On Wednesday (Jan. 18), the region unleashed an M1.7-class solar flare, they said in a Twitter post.

The sun is currently in the middle of an active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle. The current sun storm cycle, called Solar Cycle 24, is expected to peak in 2013, NASA scientists have said.

一八五九年太阳风暴,是所谓的太阳超级风暴,或是卡灵顿事件,是在有历史纪录以来最强大的太阳风暴,它发生在第十太阳周期。

磁暴

在一八五九年九月一日和二日,发生了纪录上最大的地磁风暴,全球各地都看见了极光。值得一提的是在加勒比都非常的明亮,以致落矶山当地金矿的矿工都被惊醒,以为是早晨来临了,都开始准备早餐。

越洋联系欧洲和北美州的电报系统失效,电报塔架发出火花,电报纸也都自发性的着火。尽管电源供应是关闭的,但有些电报系统似乎继续发送和接收邮件。

太阳黑子

The Carrington Event of 1859 was the first documented event of a solar flare impacting Earth. The event occurred at 11:18 a.m. EDT on Sept. 1 and is named after Richard Carrington, the solar astronomer who witnessed the event through his private observatory telescope and sketched the sun's sunspots at the time. The flare was the largest documented solar storm in the last 500 years, NASA scientists have said.

According to NOAA, the Carrington solar storm event sparked major aurora displays that were visible as far south as the Caribbean. It also caused severe interruptions in global telegraph communications, even shocking some telegraph operators and sparking fires when discharges from the lines ignited telegraph paper, according to a NASA description.

In March 1989, a powerful solar flare set off a major March 13 power blackout in Canada that left six million people without electricity for nine hours.
According to NASA, the flare disrupted electric power transmission from the Hydro Québec generating station and even melted some power transformers in New Jersey. This solar flare was nowhere near the same scale as the Carrington event, NASA scientists said.

2006: X-Ray Sun Flare for Xmas

When a major X-class solar flare erupted on the sun on Dec. 5, 2006, it registered a powerful X9 on the space weather scale.
This storm from the sun "disrupted satellite-to-ground communications and Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation signals for about 10 minutes," according to a NASA description.
The sun storm was so powerful it actually damaged the solar X-ray imager instrument on the GOES 13 satellite that snapped its picture, NOAA officials said.

二零零零年七月十四日高速太阳风抵达地球,导致卫星通讯中断,北极光甚至扩展到了美国南部佛罗里达州(相当于中国浙江看到北极光)。 二零零零年七月一次威力强大的太阳风暴造成包括中国在内的全球短波通信发生中断。

2000: The Bastille Day Event

The Bastille Day event takes its name from the French national holiday since it occurred the same day on July 14, 2000. This was a major solar eruption that registered an X5 on the scale of solar flares.
The Bastille Day event caused some satellites to short-circuit and led to some radio blackouts. It remains one of the most highly observed solar storm events and was the most powerful flare since 1989.

2003: The Ultra-Powerful Halloween Sun Storm

On Oct. 28, 2003, the sun unleashed a whopper of a solar flare. The intense sun storm was so strong it overwhelmed the spacecraft sensor measuring it. The sensor topped out at X28, already a massive flare), but later analysis found that the flare reached a peak strength of about X45, NASA has said.
The solar storm was part of a string of at least nine major flares over a two-week period.


二零零六年十二月五日太阳发生两次X级耀斑爆发

新华社北京十二月十三日电 继二零零六年十二月五日、七日太阳发生两次X级耀斑爆发及多次M级爆发之后,十二月十三日北京时间十时四十分前后,太阳又发生一次X3级猛烈爆发。
  
这次耀斑爆发对我国的短波无线电信号传播造成严重影响,短波通信、广播、探测等电子信息系统发生大面积中断或受到较长时间的严重干扰。中国电波传播研究所广州、海南、重庆等电波观测站的短波探测信号从十时二十分左右起发生全波段中断,直至十一时十五分以后才逐步出现信号,十三时三十分以后才基本恢复正常。

目前已基本处于本轮太阳活动周期的最低活动年月,太阳活动水平很低,发生大耀斑爆发的可能性较小,像最近几天这样连续发生大耀斑爆发的现象比较罕见,但不能不防。有关用户部门应及时关注空间天气的变化,尽量减少或避免空间天气灾害造成的损失。

2006: X-Ray Sun Flare for Xmas

When a major X-class solar flare erupted on the sun on Dec. 5, 2006, it registered a powerful X9 on the space weather scale.
This storm from the sun "disrupted satellite-to-ground communications and Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation signals for about 10 minutes," according to a NASA description.
The sun storm was so powerful it actually damaged the solar X-ray imager instrument on the GOES 13 satellite that snapped its picture, NOAA officials said.

是的   所以每逢有大的太阳活动   人类的航天发射或者作业就会变得小心翼翼
