I had a very interesting conversation with a surgeon who was in Kuwait during the invasion of Iraq (he left mid-Feb from here and came back mid June). He made a lot of trips into Iraq to get patients, treat them in Kuwait, and then they would either go on to Germany or to a hospital ship. The guy is an awesome doc.

He told me that there was a 9 y/o girl that came in with a 7.62X39 bullet in her brain. The story was that it fell straight down, penetrated the top of her head (bullet hole), and ended up 3/4 down through her brain.

I know this topic has come up before and I've done my homework. According to Lucien C. Haag's article "Falling Bullets: Terminal Velocities and Penetration Studies" in Wound Ballistics Review Vol 2, No. 1, the terminal velocity of such a bullet would be around 300 f/s. I didn't say anything, but I don't believe that it was a 'falling' bullet, but more likely a deflected bullet that still possessed enough velocity to penetrate as far as it did. Either that, or the bullet was fired from a long distance away.
