FIRST OF NEW CLASS OF SUPPORT TANKERS JOINS THE FLEET
The 31,000 tonne Auxiliary Oiler Wave Knight was accepted into service with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary at a ceremony at her base in Devonport, Plymouth.
Minister for Defence Procurement Lord Bach, said:
"Auxiliary Oilers play a major part in supporting the world-wide operations of the Royal Navy and are an important part of our current operations in the Gulf. RFA Wave Knight has been built to exacting standards and will provide an essential service for decades to come."
As well as being able to transport up to 16,000 tonnes of fuel, RFA Wave Knight can also carry almost 400 tonnes of fresh water and 150 tonnes of food in refrigerated containers. She has been constructed with a double hull to keep the risk of pollution to a minimum in case of damage.
First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Alan West said:
"Everyone who has been working on this project is extremely happy that RFA Wave Knight has now been successfully brought into service. Her sister ship, Wave Ruler, is expected to enter service shortly, and together they will support the Royal Navy in its world-wide operations."
