Stavridis to EuCom, Willard to PaCom

Adm. James Stavridis, commander of U.S. Southern Command, has been recommended to be the new commander of U.S. European Command, while Adm. Robert Willard was recommended to move from commander of the Navy’s Pacific Fleet to be the head of U.S Pacific Command.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the recommendations at a news conference Wednesday at the Pentagon. The recommendations require confirmation from the Senate.

If confirmed, Stavridis will replace Army Gen. Bantz Craddock and Willard will replace Adm. Timothy Keating.

Gates thanked Craddock and Keating for their service.

The announcement will prompt several moves in the Navy flag ranks, with a replacement for Willard at U.S. Pacific Fleet shuffling of positions elsewhere in the chain of command.

If confirmed as head of U.S. European Command, Stavridis will also be one of two NATO commanders as the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. He will also be the first admiral to hold the positions.

The current deputy commander at PaCom, Air Force Lt. Gen. Douglas Fraser, is slated to become the new head of U.S. Southern Command.

Gates also recommended that President Barack Obama re-nominate Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and vice chairman Marine Gen. James Cartwright for second two-years terms, according to a Defense Department news release.
