FIGHTER jets equipped with powerful and accurate lasers could be used in as little as five years, according to the US Air Force.

The Force's research lab said it's on track to have a working laser weapon on a plane by 2020, which has the ability to cause catastrophic damage ti tagets.
Kelly Hammett, chief engineer for the lab, said: “It really is a national tipping point.
"We see the technology evolving and maturing to the stage where it really can be used."
The commander of Air Force Combat Command, General Herbert "Hawk" Carlisle, revealed last May that a test is in the works involving an F-15 Eagle.
"I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll see a prototype test case in the next year or two," Carlisle told Air Combat Command.
The announcement comes just days after it was revealed the US Navy is equipping five more of its destroyer ships with ballistic missile defence systems.
The Pentagon awarded defence technology company Lockheed Martin a lucrative 35.5 million ($49.1 million) to fit five more if its DDG51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers with the Aegis systems.
Russia has repeatedly expressed concern about US plans to dramatically expand its force of Aegis-equipped missile defence warships around Europe, claiming it is escalating the arms race and upsetting established balance of forces.
In a statement, the US Department of Defence said: "This contract will cover the AWS [Air Warfare Systems] ship integration and test efforts for five new construction DDG 51 class ships, and the major modernisation of five DDG 51 class ships."
