A three-year-old girl is in hospitalrecovering from serious injuries after she was kidnapped and gang raped insouthern India.
The girl is currently under observation inintensive care.
She was sleeping beside her mother on apavement in Tirur, in Kerala, when she was kidnapped on Monday night.
The family - whose members are homeless -only noticed she was missing on Tuesday morning.
The girl was found unconscious by studentson their way to school.
One of the students told a local newspaperthat: "She had a high fever and she had ants crawling all over herbody."
Doctors at the hospital where the girl isbeing treated say it will take her months to recover.

Campaigners believe the rise is partly theresult of more women coming forward to report crimes of sexual violence.

Nonetheless, women are increasingly scaredto travel alone at night in the capital.
The city's only taxi service for women -which uses only women drivers - has told Sky News they have been inundated withcalls.
Driver Kushi Prajapati says: "Afterthe Delhi gang rape we've been busy day and night. Women feel very unsafe andthey use our taxi service for safety reasons."

There has been the increasing reportedcrime of rape in India. Rape cases are commonly reported in India's newspapersand media, where more women are prepared to come forward. Women belonging tolow castes and tribes are most at risk, in areas of lawlessness. Reportedattacks include the gang rape of young girls and rape within marriage. Therehave been cases where after proof of rape the victim is ostracized from herfamily and community. Indian rape laws are inadequate and the crime has notbeen treated with the seriousness it deserves. This is something the Indiangovernment must rectify. Bollywood is not all song and dance and Indian movieshave portrayed sexual violence against women, not always negatively, in anIndian society where the woman is to be respected but to know her place.
