The United States remains the world's dominant military power spending much more than any other country on defense and security. It has spent more on its military than the next 13 nations combined (China, Russia, UK, France, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, Germnay...) in 2011 on a list complied by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

Since 2001, the base defense budget has soared from $287 billion to $530 billion -- and that's before accounting for the primary costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, reports the Washington Post
A post on defense-update.com says that China's military developments are fuelled by continuing increases in defence spending. China now spends more on defence than neighbouring Japan, South Korea and Taiwan combined. If the 15 per cent average annual increases in China's official defence spending seen over the past decade continue into the medium term, Chinese defence outlays could rival US base defence-budget spending by 2025.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies in its report has said that the increase in Asian spending has been so rapid, and the defence austerity pursued by European states so severe, that in 2012 nominal Asian spending $287.4 billion (192.3 billion pounds) exceeded total official defence spending not just in NATO Europe, but across all of Europe, including spending by non-NATO European states.

India must rapidly modernize her forces not because a superpower neighbor is doing so to meet its own perceived challenges from various quarters, but because the kind of economic & social aspirations that India nurtures & having finally managed to ignite a ring of fire around itself, we can't do without a modernized armed force. Of course there are matters of fiscal consolidation & such in the short-term , but our policies must look beyond the present economic challenges & prepare for the medium & longer term national security & however unenviable our indigenous defense production capabilities may seem, we must start building our domestic industry while dealing with any corruption in the defense acquisitions with an iron fist , but not letting the acquisition process fall victim to some corrupt operators , when the specific acquisitions meet our requirements.

India must rapidly modernize her forces not because a superpower neighbor is doing so to meet its own perceived challenges from various quarters, but because the kind of economic & social aspirations that India nurtures & having finally managed to ignite a ring of fire around itself, we can't do without a modernized armed force. Of course there are matters of fiscal consolidation & such in the short-term , but our policies must look beyond the present economic challenges & prepare for the medium & longer term national security & however unenviable our indigenous defense production capabilities may seem, we must start building our domestic industry while dealing with any corruption in the defense acquisitions with an iron fist , but not letting the acquisition process fall victim to some corrupt operators , when the specific acquisitions meet our requirements.

The United States remains the world's dominant military power spending much more than any other country on defense and security. It has spent more on its military than the next 13 nations combined (China, Russia, UK, France, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, Germnay...) in 2011 on a list complied by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

A post on defense-update.com says that China's military developments are fuelled by continuing increases in defence spending. China now spends more on defence than neighbouring Japan, South Korea and Taiwan combined. If the 15 per cent average annual increases in China's official defence spending seen over the past decade continue into the medium term, Chinese defence outlays could rival US base defence-budget spending by 2025.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies in its report has said that the increase in Asian spending has been so rapid, and the defence austerity pursued by European states so severe, that in 2012 nominal Asian spending $287.4 billion (192.3 billion pounds) exceeded total official defence spending not just in NATO Europe, but across all of Europe, including spending by non-NATO European states.

Their missile shield will intercept it and send it back to us. don't underestimate their military they spend $143 billion so they could have some state of the art weaponry in their arsenal.

Indian budget is smaller even than Japan ! China is surging ahead in all areas because the spell of hard, cruel communist discipline has removed all opposition and resistance to whatever Govt.wants to do. In India, we have a democracy that allows people to put spokes even in some rare but good projects. That is why India can never, never match China, unless and until that totally absent sense of patriotism comes back and builds us as a united nation. That seems to be impossible unless of course we pass through sufferings like Japan, UK, France and other countries. Even if India increases its defence spending, it will only spawn more and larger scams.

While I agree with most of what you said, I believe we don't have to match anyone in every sphere , but rather prioritize & reinforce our strategic advantages enough to make our weak spots effectively less vulnerable. We'd still need to solve the conundrum of corruption though. Its just anti-national.

America and japan helped china for its development, they thought that they can bring democracy by uplifting the people which can bring revolution... but this may not happen soon since the china goverment is keeping its people busy in hand to mouth jobs and engage in the development of the country.
China is increasing the defence spending because they have lot of money in reserves and they may need the military for internal instabilities in future.
India do not have to fear of China, because India has a very strong military and also a peace loving country.
Most probaly Iran or Pakistan has to worry. Iran for Oil and Pakistan for their wickedness.

India has every reason to fear China, because we are not as strong as China, we have no true, reliable friends who will fight for us and - this may not be palatable - India is accustomed to being ruled by Mughals, the British etc. Can we rise up and make ourselves stronger with the mess we are in, thanks to the Indian democracy !

Agree.Needless to say that even our armed forces are not capable to take any bold action. See what happend on Pakistan border, they took away head of our citizen and their friend and after wards claiming foul. Indian budget is smaller even than Japan ! China is surging ahead in all areas because the spell of hard, cruel communist discipline has removed all opposition and resistance to whatever Govt.wants to do. In India, we have a democracy that allows people to put spokes even in some rare but good projects. That is why India can never, never match China, unless and until that totally absent sense of patriotism comes back and builds us as a united nation. That seems to be impossible unless of course we pass through sufferings like Japan, UK, France and other countries. Even if India increases its defence spending, it will only spawn more and larger scams.

While I agree with most of what you said, I believe we don't have to match anyone in every sphere , but rather prioritize & reinforce our strategic advantages enough to make our weak spots effectively less vulnerable. We'd still need to solve the conundrum of corruption though. Its just anti-national.

America and japan helped china for its development, they thought that they can bring democracy by uplifting the people which can bring revolution... but this may not happen soon since the china goverment is keeping its people busy in hand to mouth jobs and engage in the development of the country.
China is increasing the defence spending because they have lot of money in reserves and they may need the military for internal instabilities in future.
India do not have to fear of China, because India has a very strong military and also a peace loving country.
Most probaly Iran or Pakistan has to worry. Iran for Oil and Pakistan for their wickedness.

India has every reason to fear China, because we are not as strong as China, we have no true, reliable friends who will fight for us and - this may not be palatable - India is accustomed to being ruled by Mughals, the British etc. Can we rise up and make ourselves stronger with the mess we are in, thanks to the Indian democracy !

The democracy is not a easy path...its kind of evolution from monkey to man, since india is very huge and complex society which has been like frozen stage during the mughal and british era... the mind set of the people is not developed... still we have many hungry genes in political system that they well never be content, and they can not think wiser in betterment of the country because the genes does not support the thought process... Good thought, but deterrent? That will never happen - for 2 reasons : 1.can`t build that deterrence at all and 2. even after developing military might, we will not have the guts to ever use it. Remember 26/11 et al.

Agree.Needless to say that even our armed forces are not capable to take any bold action. See what happend on Pakistan border, they took away head of our citizen and their friend and after wards claiming foul. They should have given a good lesson to Pakis and then could have discussed this with Government.Piri, u are right, its not only the Government but people of india are also corrupt.

Don't worry!
China is 3 times bigger than India territory wise and has 3 times of the number of neighbours India has; so it is perfectly in sync with their needs and requirements.
India should better invest in productive economy than the destructive one lest it will end up like North Korea where every 5th citizen is a soldier in arms not knowing whom to fight against.
North Korea has as much as Army strength as India has i.e. one million and this is against a population of 2 Cr.
One one side they spend on army and on the other they survive from the food donations across the world.

Very well said. Problem is all regional leaders Karuna, Amma, Mulayam, Mamta, Deve Gowda, Maya, Naveen Pattanaik etc., are same. They can't think beyond their region. People of each state also needs to be matured to pick national party for center and state. Else, every time when their political interest is challenged, they pull down the government they were supporting. This syndrome was seen in all regional parties.

Japan has a bigger military spending compared to India - who is Japan fighting?? Imagined wars, imagined enemies but real money is being spent on useless ideas - BTW why do we have UN when we want to spend such huge amounts on military??

Everyone acknowledges that China is a potential threat to all especially India.But our dear Karunanidhi is more interested in protecting his own and state interests over that of Indian interests.He is playing politics over the Tamilians issue in SriLanka.SriLanka is no angel but then even the LTTE and Prabhakaran were not and were responisible for the death of thousands of civilians both Srilankans and Tamils.People like Karuna are short sighted and only think of their narrow political interests over that of the nation.

Very well said. Problem is all regional leaders Karuna, Amma, Mulayam, Mamta, Deve Gowda, Maya, Naveen Pattanaik etc., are same. They can't think beyond their region. People of each state also needs to be matured to pick national party for center and state. Else, every time when their political interest is challenged, they pull down the government they were supporting. This syndrome was seen in all regional parties.
