Can India ever beat China? Here's what the aam aadmi says
In a recent interview with rediff.com, Professor Arvind Panagariya had said that economic power would shift from the Western nations to Asia and China, and India would emerge as a major economic power.Panagariya is a professor of Economics and Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at the Columbia University in New York."In 15 years . . .we will more or less become what China is today and that will make us the fourth largest or maybe even third economy in the world," he had said.
Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen wrote in Asia Society: ". . . China is quite a big figure in Indian thinking and has always been so. In 7th century when Xuanzang left India and went back to China after having spent about a decade in India, he asked rather implausibly the question, 'Is there anyone in India who does not admire China fully?' This is the nice 7th century question. It is a serious question and of course it is coming in many different forms."
In the same article, Sen pointed out that "China's success in economic growth and the number of poorer people going down have been radically high. But let me mention here a slight contrast. The Chinese -- if the world has many fewer poorer people today in terms of lowness of income, and that is indeed the case, the biggest contribution of that has come from China. The second biggest is India but quite a big distance behind China."

Indians comparing themselves with China all the time , its pathetic . Chinese are hard working people with a can do spirit . They are way ahead of India in the fields , factories , sports, and the battlefield.They walk with pride and respect in international streets . On the other hand Indians peddle ahimsa, some spiritual mumbo-jumbo and little else. It's pathetic.

Dear Friend,USSR was once a super power competiting & feared by US,,, then there came democracy (Boris Yelsin with west support)in USSR and its doom,,,
Thanks to Putin,,, They are on track now,,,
We got Democracy & so called Secular even before we could provide two normal meals to our people,,,It became our biggest hurdle in development,, be it Industralisation,,Land holding patterns, labour laws, SEZ etc,
Let us wait and see how stable China will be if Democracy & Secularism are enforced in that country,,,It
will crumble faster than USSR,

China has a planned, sustained and agressive growth model and herein lies the difference. The political scenario in India is so divided in promoting oneself at any cost and paying lip service to national interest is the bane of the Indian society at large. Democracy is fine , but coalition politics will always hold us back. Today India is 50 years behind China in development. Infrastructure is the key. At the current rate the gap will only widen.Regional interests cannot outweigh national prioirities.Correct this anomaly and we will have half the job done. Look at the Government's inability to resolve land aquisition problems for starters.In addition we have two major issues threathening us . The first being corruption and the second the loss of over 20 % of the land to naxalites where it is there writ that operates.Now we have all kinds of troublesd on our borders - the most alarming being the Chinese themselves.Simply put the answer lies in getting national and regional parties to agree on a common agenda and policy guideline for tackling the issues that are a major cause of concern and an impediment to our progress.

It would be difficult to reach the level of China as in India we have overdose of democracy which provides huge scope for anti development protest, destruction of public property in the name of agitations.

Corruption is the root cause of the faliure of every measure taken in the improvement of the ares like population, pollution, education, infrastructure, law...... if that is done everything is done,,,comparision will not help,,,,and if we need to copmare then there are any number of countries from the west to be compare,,time for improvement,,,attitude and intergrity towards the nations should be change of the whole society,,,,we are still trapped in hindus,,muslims,,,,etc....

I think that its very true that india first should correct itself in key areas like corruption,taxation,education,infrastructure,leadership and governance. chinese have done and so do we can. I think that india should now take some bold economic decisions and show some risk taking ability like china which will help india grow enormously. india with this pace can never match china. we should try to explore our own capabilities and strenghts and work on it a better, we need not copy china in every aconomic decision. India's democracy, strong media, entrprenuership and brands are well known in the world. Mass production will reduce cost and thus increase exports. india should work to its full potential

till each and every major province in the country is turned in to a Germany, a France, a Britain, a Spain etc. China has got a long long way to go, even in the well-known field of infrastrcture building with such projects as high-speed rails(13,000km by 2012), expressways(11,000km each year till 2013), nuclear power plants(dozens under construction and more planned or proposed), wind and solar farms(all the rage), etc. China is determined to have all major provinces achieve infrastructure densities as high as those in european states. China is also urbanizing in a huge way. The latest plan is to turn "towns" into "cities". So far, each county has only one "city" where the county seat is located. Soon each
county will have several "cities", meaning, amongst other things, a boom in infrastrcture and housing investments in rural areas. China won't stop till its rural population shrinks (from the current 50%) to 5% of the total. Those forecasting, or rather wishing, a slowing, let alone collapsing, China will be sourly disappointed.

Amercians will enjoy low inflation, big homes , big life, strong currency, strong influence and overall a good lifestyle with excellent purchasing power and best quality standards product.

Is the question worthy ? Both countries have their strengths and their weaknesses, and both claim greatness of their civilisations.But what matters is not the past, but the reality of this day and age. With huge problems that are in ways unique to India, and with no sincerity by those who matter, in addressing these, we in India should worry less about competing with China, and focus more on improving our country. As someone said statistics is like a bikini, revealing all but the vitals. Similarly, economists talk of figures, which do not paint the real picture, and most intellectuals are far removed from commonsense and reality. India, dare I say, with its growing burden of problems, internal and external, and you can keep counting; first needs to put its house in order and then look outwards and to China. This is precisely what China did, with clarity, determination and ruthlessness. India is however different from China, and should build and rise on its own strengths, rather than obsess itself with imitating and competing with China or other nations for that matter.
Is China India's friend ?
这个问题有价值吗？两个国家都各有优劣，并且都声称有伟大的文明成就。但最重要的不是过去，而是如今的现实。印度面临的种种问题是独一无二的（哈哈，看来印度也很有“特色”），而当权者却毫无解决问题的诚意。认清这一点，我们印度就该少去担心怎么和中国比较，而是多专注于如何使我们的国家进步。有人形容统计学就像比基尼一样，掩盖了最重要的部分。

If u calculate GDP than we r $1.31 trillion and they r $5 trillion.
Rediff i use 2 like u nt anymore.

If we can work hard and think more wise yes we can surpass china in another 20 years. But this is very difficult task and can be achieve if we are truely sincere. India was the richest country in the world 1000 years ago and surely we can have our prosperity back with quality education and high level of nationalism

China has a planned, sustained and agressive growth model and herein lies the difference. The political scenario in India is so divided in promoting oneself at any cost and paying lip service to national interest is the bane of the Indian society at large. Democracy is fine , but coalition politics will always hold us back. Today India is 50 years behind China in development. Infrastructure is the key. At the current rate the gap will only widen.Regional interests cannot outweigh national prioirities.Correct this anomaly and we will have half the job done. Look at the Government's inability to resolve land aquisition problems for starters.In addition we have two major issues threathening us . The first being corruption and the second the loss of over 20 % of the land to naxalites where it is there writ that operates.Now we have all kinds of troublesd on our borders - the most alarming being the Chinese themselves.Simply put the answer lies in getting national and regional parties to agree on a common agenda and policy guideline for tackling the issues that are a major cause of concern and an impediment to our progress.

It would be difficult to reach the level of China as in India we have overdose of democracy which provides huge scope for anti development protest, destruction of public property in the name of agitations.

Corruption is the root cause of the faliure of every measure taken in the improvement of the ares like population, pollution, education, infrastructure, law...... if that is done everything is done,,,comparision will not help,,,,and if we need to copmare then there are any number of countries from the west to be compare,,time for improvement,,,attitude and intergrity towards the nations should be change of the whole society,,,,we are still trapped in hindus,,muslims,,,,etc....

I think that its very true that india first should correct itself in key areas like corruption,taxation,education,infrastructure,leadership and governance. chinese have done and so do we can. I think that india should now take some bold economic decisions and show some risk taking ability like china which will help india grow enormously. india with this pace can never match china. we should try to explore our own capabilities and strenghts and work on it a better, we need not copy china in every aconomic decision. India's democracy, strong media, entrprenuership and brands are well known in the world. Mass production will reduce cost and thus increase exports. india should work to its full potential

till each and every major province in the country is turned in to a Germany, a France, a Britain, a Spain etc. China has got a long long way to go, even in the well-known field of infrastrcture building with such projects as high-speed rails(13,000km by 2012), expressways(11,000km each year till 2013), nuclear power plants(dozens under construction and more planned or proposed), wind and solar farms(all the rage), etc. China is determined to have all major provinces achieve infrastructure densities as high as those in european states. China is also urbanizing in a huge way. The latest plan is to turn "towns" into "cities". So far, each county has only one "city" where the county seat is located. Soon each
county will have several "cities", meaning, amongst other things, a boom in infrastrcture and housing investments in rural areas. China won't stop till its rural population shrinks (from the current 50%) to 5% of the total. Those forecasting, or rather wishing, a slowing, let alone collapsing, China will be sourly disappointed.

Thanks to Putin,,, They are on track now,,,
We got Democracy & so called Secular even before we could provide two normal meals to our people,,,It became our biggest hurdle in development,, be it Industralisation,,Land holding patterns, labour laws, SEZ etc,
Let us wait and see how stable China will be if Democracy & Secularism are enforced in that country,,,It will crumble faster than USSR,

Is the question worthy ? Both countries have their strengths and their weaknesses, and both claim greatness of their civilisations.But what matters is not the past, but the reality of this day and age. With huge problems that are in ways unique to India, and with no sincerity by those who matter, in addressing these, we in India should worry less about competing with China, and focus more on improving our country. As someone said statistics is like a bikini, revealing all but the vitals. Similarly, economists talk of figures, which do not paint the real picture, and most intellectuals are far removed from commonsense and reality. India, dare I say, with its growing burden of problems, internal and external, and you can keep counting; first needs to put its house in order and then look outwards and to China. This is precisely what China did, with clarity, determination and ruthlessness. India is however different from China, and should build and rise on its own strengths, rather than obsess itself with imitating and competing with China or other nations for that matter.
Is China India's friend ?
这个问题有价值吗？两个国家都各有优劣，并且都声称有伟大的文明成就。但最重要的不是过去，而是如今的现实。印度面临的种种问题是独一无二的（哈哈，看来印度也很有“特色”），而当权者却毫无解决问题的诚意。认清这一点，我们印度就该少去担心怎么和中国比较，而是多专注于如何使我们的国家进步。有人形容统计学就像比基尼一样，掩盖了最重要的部分。

If we can work hard and think more wise yes we can surpass china in another 20 years. But this is very difficult task and can be achieve if we are truely sincere. India was the richest country in the world 1000 years ago and surely we can have our prosperity back with quality education and high level of nationalism

In a recent interview with rediff.com, Professor Arvind Panagariya had said that economic power would shift from the Western nations to Asia and China, and India would emerge as a major economic power.Panagariya is a professor of Economics and Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at the Columbia University in New York."In 15 years . . .we will more or less become what China is today and that will make us the fourth largest or maybe even third economy in the world," he had said.
Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen wrote in Asia Society: ". . . China is quite a big figure in Indian thinking and has always been so. In 7th century when Xuanzang left India and went back to China after having spent about a decade in India, he asked rather implausibly the question, 'Is there anyone in India who does not admire China fully?' This is the nice 7th century question. It is a serious question and of course it is coming in many different forms."
In the same article, Sen pointed out that "China's success in economic growth and the number of poorer people going down have been radically high. But let me mention here a slight contrast. The Chinese -- if the world has many fewer poorer people today in terms of lowness of income, and that is indeed the case, the biggest contribution of that has come from China. The second biggest is India but quite a big distance behind China."

Indians comparing themselves with China all the time , its pathetic . Chinese are hard working people with a can do spirit . They are way ahead of India in the fields , factories , sports, and the battlefield.They walk with pride and respect in international streets . On the other hand Indians peddle ahimsa, some spiritual mumbo-jumbo and little else. It's pathetic.

till each and every major province in the country is turned in to a Germany, a France, a Britain, a Spain etc. China has got a long long way to go, even in the well-known field of infrastrcture building with such projects as high-speed rails(13,000km by 2012), expressways(11,000km each year till 2013), nuclear power plants(dozens under construction and more planned or proposed), wind and solar farms(all the rage), etc. China is determined to have all major provinces achieve infrastructure densities as high as those in european states. China is also urbanizing in a huge way. The latest plan is to turn "towns" into "cities". So far, each county has only one "city" where the county seat is located. Soon each
county will have several "cities", meaning, amongst other things, a boom in infrastrcture and housing investments in rural areas. China won't stop till its rural population shrinks (from the current 50%) to 5% of the total. Those forecasting, or rather wishing, a slowing, let alone collapsing, China will be sourly disappointed.

We got Democracy & so called Secular even before we could provide two normal meals to our people,,,It became our biggest hurdle in development,, be it Industralisation,,Land holding patterns, labour laws, SEZ etc,

Is the question worthy ? Both countries have their strengths and their weaknesses, and both claim greatness of their civilisations.But what matters is not the past, but the reality of this day and age. With huge problems that are in ways unique to India, and with no sincerity by those who matter, in addressing these, we in India should worry less about competing with China, and focus more on improving our country. As someone said statistics is like a bikini, revealing all but the vitals. Similarly, economists talk of figures, which do not paint the real picture, and most intellectuals are far removed from commonsense and reality. India, dare I say, with its growing burden of problems, internal and external, and you can keep counting; first needs to put its house in order and then look outwards and to China. This is precisely what China did, with clarity, determination and ruthlessness. India is however different from China, and should build and rise on its own strengths, rather than obsess itself with imitating and competing with China or other nations for that matter.
Is China India's friend ?

In a recent interview with rediff.com, Professor Arvind Panagariya had said that economic power would shift from the Western nations to Asia and China, and India would emerge as a major economic power.Panagariya is a professor of Economics and Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at the Columbia University in New York."In 15 years . . .we will more or less become what China is today and that will make us the fourth largest or maybe even third economy in the world," he had said.
Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen wrote in Asia Society: ". . . China is quite a big figure in Indian thinking and has always been so. In 7th century when Xuanzang left India and went back to China after having spent about a decade in India, he asked rather implausibly the question, 'Is there anyone in India who does not admire China fully?' This is the nice 7th century question. It is a serious question and of course it is coming in many different forms."
In the same article, Sen pointed out that "China's success in economic growth and the number of poorer people going down have been radically high. But let me mention here a slight contrast. The Chinese -- if the world has many fewer poorer people today in terms of lowness of income, and that is indeed the case, the biggest contribution of that has come from China. The second biggest is India but quite a big distance behind China."

China has a planned, sustained and agressive growth model and herein lies the difference. The political scenario in India is so divided in promoting oneself at any cost and paying lip service to national interest is the bane of the Indian society at large. Democracy is fine , but coalition politics will always hold us back. Today India is 50 years behind China in development. Infrastructure is the key. At the current rate the gap will only widen.Regional interests cannot outweigh national prioirities.Correct this anomaly and we will have half the job done. Look at the Government's inability to resolve land aquisition problems for starters.In addition we have two major issues threathening us . The first being corruption and the second the loss of over 20 % of the land to naxalites where it is there writ that operates.Now we have all kinds of troublesd on our borders - the most alarming being the Chinese themselves.Simply put the answer lies in getting national and regional parties to agree on a common agenda and policy guideline for tackling the issues that are a major cause of concern and an impediment to our progress.

Corruption is the root cause of the faliure of every measure taken in the improvement of the ares like population, pollution, education, infrastructure, law...... if that is done everything is done,,,comparision will not help,,,,and if we need to copmare then there are any number of countries from the west to be compare,,time for improvement,,,attitude and intergrity towards the nations should be change of the whole society,,,,we are still trapped in hindus,,muslims,,,,etc....

I think that its very true that india first should correct itself in key areas like corruption,taxation,education,infrastructure,leadership and governance. chinese have done and so do we can. I think that india should now take some bold economic decisions and show some risk taking ability like china which will help india grow enormously. india with this pace can never match china. we should try to explore our own capabilities and strenghts and work on it a better, we need not copy china in every aconomic decision. India's democracy, strong media, entrprenuership and brands are well known in the world. Mass production will reduce cost and thus increase exports. india should work to its full potential

Is the question worthy ? Both countries have their strengths and their weaknesses, and both claim greatness of their civilisations.But what matters is not the past, but the reality of this day and age. With huge problems that are in ways unique to India, and with no sincerity by those who matter, in addressing these, we in India should worry less about competing with China, and focus more on improving our country. As someone said statistics is like a bikini, revealing all but the vitals. Similarly, economists talk of figures, which do not paint the real picture, and most intellectuals are far removed from commonsense and reality. India, dare I say, with its growing burden of problems, internal and external, and you can keep counting; first needs to put its house in order and then look outwards and to China. This is precisely what China did, with clarity, determination and ruthlessness. India is however different from China, and should build and rise on its own strengths, rather than obsess itself with imitating and competing with China or other nations for that matter.
Is China India's friend ?

Even if we consider in any respect, India is far better than china. That is why China is doing business with our country. How can we ignore that achievements of Chandrayan by our indian scientists?
I came to know from a Korean( working in china and now he is in india and working with my organization) that some villages in China do not have Electricity, medical, transportation fascilities. At least our country is emerging in this respect.
It is known and agreed that our political leaders are Ideal and Idols of corruption, but there are many good people in this country working for the welfare.
India has more than 4000 years of civilization. one of the major religion in china roots to Indian origin. Huent sang, a chinese ambassador praised India as the best nation in his manuscripts.
Problems are everywhere(including USA, china etc). Poverty is also everywhere. It is only time can cure these problems. Wait and watch.

You can bury your head in the sand like an ostrich. That will not make India a competitor with China. Every country has poverty, but no country has poverty on the scale of India. Large parts of our country are poorer than sub-Saharan Africa.
There is not a single Indian city that is presentable. Before we think of competing with China, we will have to learn to sweep our streets.

China knows where it is going, it has a vision, the leadership is committed to development. The infrastructure is developed a a very fast pace, which is what a country needs to grow, Ports, electricity, quality housing, railways, roads, mass transport. Where is india in all these sectors. The electricity grid is collapsing with poor supply and power theft,no indian port appears in list of top 25 by traffic,railways run at the same speed as they have done 30 years ago and no expansion of track, safety is a recent concern reappering.
China has a population policy in place, attempts are made to deal with corruption with a firm hand, a case in point is the death sentence awarded to the former vice mayor of Beijing for bribery charges in 2008 olympic games, what about our CWG corruption, can any one lay hand on these people.
Let us try to compete with countries which are realistic targets. China is way way beyond our reach.

but let us all be practical. China earns 75% from manufacturing sector. India is no where close to that figure. in terms of defense China is much ahead of U.S. as well. China has got 120 nuclear war ships with 12 holes which can fire missile & India has got 2 nuclear warships whch has got 2 holes to fire missiles.
In terms of service industry now most of the BPOs are entering china & chinese government is spending moolah to teach them english so that they can compete. Well am not degrading India in any way. we have the fire power but we lack determination Our government policies doesn't compliment our growth strategy.

it is not understood why we are comparing india with china. india is a country with over 60 million english speaking people, making us the second only to usa. thus india should target to compete with usa,uk,canada,australia,new zealand & south africa-all english speaking countries. i am surprised why rediff com every week comes out with an article india vs china, it is denigrating for india to be compared with china which is a third world country.

I don't think india should even compare with Africa because there more indian like you bs living in poverty than africa. I believe africa have more toilet than india. So please don't even think of comparing to china or western countries.

Now China is second economic world power after US. Their steel production is 10 times ours. Their trains r much faster than ours. They hang corrupt people. Here corrupt people r our rulers. They crush Islamic terrorism, we even try to save someone involved in bombing Parliament for getting votes.

Even if we consider in any respect, India is far better than china. That is why China is doing business with our country. How can we ignore that achievements of Chandrayan by our indian scientists?
I came to know from a Korean( working in china and now he is in india and working with my organization) that some villages in China do not have Electricity, medical, transportation fascilities. At least our country is emerging in this respect.
It is known and agreed that our political leaders are Ideal and Idols of corruption, but there are many good people in this country working for the welfare.
India has more than 4000 years of civilization. one of the major religion in china roots to Indian origin. Huent sang, a chinese ambassador praised India as the best nation in his manuscripts.
Problems are everywhere(including USA, china etc). Poverty is also everywhere. It is only time can cure these problems. Wait and watch.

You can bury your head in the sand like an ostrich. That will not make India a competitor with China. Every country has poverty, but no country has poverty on the scale of India. Large parts of our country are poorer than sub-Saharan Africa.
There is not a single Indian city that is presentable. Before we think of competing with China, we will have to learn to sweep our streets.

China knows where it is going, it has a vision, the leadership is committed to development. The infrastructure is developed a a very fast pace, which is what a country needs to grow, Ports, electricity, quality housing, railways, roads, mass transport. Where is india in all these sectors. The electricity grid is collapsing with poor supply and power theft,no indian port appears in list of top 25 by traffic,railways run at the same speed as they have done 30 years ago and no expansion of track, safety is a recent concern reappering.
China has a population policy in place, attempts are made to deal with corruption with a firm hand, a case in point is the death sentence awarded to the former vice mayor of Beijing for bribery charges in 2008 olympic games, what about our CWG corruption, can any one lay hand on these people.
Let us try to compete with countries which are realistic targets. China is way way beyond our reach.

but let us all be practical. China earns 75% from manufacturing sector. India is no where close to that figure. in terms of defense China is much ahead of U.S. as well. China has got 120 nuclear war ships with 12 holes which can fire missile & India has got 2 nuclear warships whch has got 2 holes to fire missiles.
In terms of service industry now most of the BPOs are entering china & chinese government is spending moolah to teach them english so that they can compete. Well am not degrading India in any way. we have the fire power but we lack determination Our government policies doesn't compliment our growth strategy.

it is not understood why we are comparing india with china. india is a country with over 60 million english speaking people, making us the second only to usa. thus india should target to compete with usa,uk,canada,australia,new zealand & south africa-all english speaking countries. i am surprised why rediff com every week comes out with an article india vs china, it is denigrating for india to be compared with china which is a third world country.

I don't think india should even compare with Africa because there more indian like you bs living in poverty than africa. I believe africa have more toilet than india. So please don't even think of comparing to china or western countries.

印度食品支出在可支配收入里所占的比例太高了。
我对购买力平价没有太多研究，但似乎食品价格在这个评价体系里占很大比重

可以肯定以上帖子中的三哥们，大部分属于年轻一辈的精英阶层，受过良好教育，有过海外留学或工作经历，其中还有人在天朝呆过，所以说的话比较靠谱... 三哥的中下阶层完全没有“见识”根本不了解外部世界是什么样子的，只迷信媒体的宣传，甚至认为中国人都吃蟑螂（奥运会期间国内有个报道说河北某人吃自己养殖的蟑螂，本来是个“奇闻”，结果被CNN大肆报道，很多阿三找我来求证....所以以后国内别报道这种变态的东西，特别容易让外国人误解）但是阿三普通百姓对中国人还算友好，只是喜欢找借口嘲笑天朝而已，很二的一群人（１０亿左右，汗 —_—!!)
其实，三哥的精英们，大致分为两派，一派认为天朝很先进，主张Ch-india 合作，希望天朝帮助他们发展。另一派认为天朝确实发展的太快了，对全世界来说都是一个巨大的威胁，必须联合米国和泥盆及欧洲一起遏制天朝。
