Two Chinese fisheries patrol ships have been spotted just outside Japanese territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. The ships were detected about one hour after 4 Chinese maritime patrol ships left the area.

The disputed islands are controlled by Japan but claimed by China and Taiwan.

Japan's Coast Guard officials said on Monday they found the two ships navigating about 44 kilometers northeast of one of the islands around 9PM.

The coast guard issued warnings for them not to come closer to Japanese territory. They are continuing to monitor the ships' movements.

The ships appeared soon after 4 Chinese maritime patrol ships left the contiguous zone just outside Japan's territorial waters.

The 4 ships were spotted in the area on Monday afternoon and remained there for nearly 8 hours despite the coast guard's repeated warnings.

More than 10 Chinese maritime and fisheries patrol ships have been found in the zone since September 18th. Some of them entered Japanese waters but they all left last Wednesday as typhoons approached the area.
