Two of the successful bids for the US Marine Corps' Marine Personnel Carrier programme broke cover at the service's annual Modern Day Marine exposition.

The USMC in August 2012 awarded four contracts to evaluate off-the-shelf platforms that it might buy for its planned fleet of 579 MPCs.

The awards were approximately USD3.5 million apiece and were let to Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), and SAIC, a spokesman for the corps told IHS Jane's at the time.

Lockheed Martin has partnered with Finland's Patria Land Systems to offer the Havoc 8x8 vehicle, which is based on Patria's 8x8 Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV), Ric Magness, Lockheed Martin's programme director for ground vehicles, told IHS Jane's at the September exposition. The AMV is currently fielded by several European countries and is deployed in Afghanistan with a Polish contingent.

Magness said the platform is capable of travelling at about 6 kt in water and 65 mph on roads. It is driven by a 540 hp diesel engine with 1,500 lb/ft of torque.

The Havoc does not use a V-shaped hull design but instead has a 'subframe' to mitigate the effects of an underbelly blast and to absorb shrapnel.
