BEIJING, Wednesday, Dec. 15 - Taiwan's president, Chen Shui-bian, has stepped down as chairman of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, and a spokesman for the Chinese government has criticized his pro-independence stance in its first official reaction to his party's defeat in legislative elections over the weekend.

China's state media interpreted the result as a setback for separatist forces on the island it claims as a province. On Wednesday, Li Weiyi, spokesman for the policy making Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a news conference that Mr. Chen's push for independence would increase "tensions in the Taiwan Straits."
