BANGALORE:  In a set back to the aspiration of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to become a global player in aviation, a prototype Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT), S3466 crashed on Thursday during testing, making it the third such crash in recent years.

The IJT, which is all set to replace the Kiran aircraft in the Indian Air Force (IAF), crashed at 3.10 pm in Kelamangalam, Laxmipuram village, near Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu, on Thursday.

According to an official statement by HAL, the pilots Group Captain Mathur of NFTC and Wing Commander Patra of AFTC (CoPilot) ejected from the aircraft before it crashed into the woods in the area.

The malfunction is said to have occurred when the pilots were performing a "stalling" manoeuvre, which checks flight control ability.

Reports also confirmed that there were no civilians injured in the accident.

HAL has constituted a court of inquiry into the Thursday's incident to determine the cause of the accident. Although there were reports that the flight was in flames when it crashed, HAL authorities did not confirm the same.

HAL Chairman Ashok Nayak downplayed the incident and said it was "part of testing". "The cause of the crash has not yet been determined but we will look into that," he said hinting it could have been a "basic defect".

He also said it could have been a maneuver that the pilots tried but were unable to recover from. "This is normal,"he said and added that incidents such as these were part of the testing process. He dismissed some questions on the implications of the crash as the IJTs are to be inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) soon and said "there would be no problems there".

Official sources have confirmed that the flight data recorder has been recovered and the data would be retrieved in a couple of days.

The pilots were flown back to Bangalore in a helicopter. This is not the first such incident relating to the IJT or HAL.

Just before Aero India 2009, an IJT Prototype Trainer Two (PT2) landed on its belly at HAL Airport when there seemed to be some malfunction in the landing gear. In the 2007 edition of Aero-India, an IJT had careened off the runway. The aircraft had tilted to one side and lost balance while trying to take off. Though the pilot tried to bring the aircraft back on the run way, a tyre burst and the aircraft was damaged in the incident.

Even in this incident, the pilots were not harmed, but questions about their reliability were raised. The aviation major also witnessed a crash of one of its helicopters (Dhruv) the same week. Pilot Priye Sharma was killed and another was injured

S3466 crashed on Thursday during testing, making it the third such crash in recent years.

32# swunrj
