In China, the Libyan Revolt Can be Seen in a Different Light
Posted by Bradley Perrett at 4/8/2011 11:11 AM CDT

I do not know of any scientific survey of Chinese opinion on NATO's support for the Libyan rebels, but readers might be interested in the unscientifically collected opinions of my friends here in Beijing.
They all hold the same view and it is quite a simple one: the United States is attacking Libya; European countries are helping.
"It reminds me of the foreign intervention in the Boxer Rebellion" of 1900, says one friend, unaware that this time the foreigners are helping rebels.

My friends, all reasonably well-educated but with varying degrees of interest in foreign affairs, are quite unaware that the recent events in Tunisia and Egypt were democratic revolutions, or at least attempts at democratic revolution. They do not know much about Gaddafi. They do know that he is the president of Libya.

I have heard the opinions of about six of my friends on this.
One says: "I think it [the Libyan fighting] will turn out alright. I have seen a news report that says the United States will fail."

I have previously written on Ares on the attitudes of Chinese to foreign affairs and Chinese foreign policy. It is much more nationalist and anti-Western than most Westerners imagine.
On the other hand, we should not not take my experience too seriously. The opinions of a handful of people hardly represent a country.

On the otherhand, we have see stories like the EP-3 and maritime harrassment and it seems like some in the PLA are itching for something more.

In any case, I appreciate that the Chinese are capable of a long view that we seem to have lost decades ago.

Just Back from China, A couple of things are interesting.

The CCTV channel 7 (PLA channel) is analytical on the attacks, but not the targets nor stratagies!

It's played like a western invasion. The media is only reporting a particular angle, Boxer rebellion is a good analogy. It applies to all in China only watching official sources, and the unofficial methods are being clamped down on currently.

Helping the rebels is worse in some eyes than helping the official government. All in all I was in rural areas and found the same viewpoints described above.

The best of times comes when there's trouble between folks we've placed on the same side of the good/evil spectrum. Turkey vs. Israel? Ok, well that one wasn't so hard to pick, Turkey's ass is out the door. Only what are they doing with our nukes? More interesting: Russia vs. its Islamic insurgency. On the one hand you've got Darth Vader (Putin) but on the other the same guys we've been fighting. Oh it's all so confusing when things aren't labelled properly!

Harpooner, the ages of the friends with whom I discussed this ranged from early 20s (undergraduate students who help me to improve my mandarin) to 40s (city dwellers who work in offices).

Further to Goldfish's observations, it is fairly easy to create a distorted view of the Libyan intervention: just leave out the context. If media report only or mainly that bombs are falling, then it would appear to the public that one country is attacking another. For entirely domestic reasons, the Chinese propaganda authorities have every reason to play down the anti-authoritarian nature of the rebellion.
