(CNN) -- Workers continued efforts to cool down fuel rods inside two nuclear reactors Sunday as a Japanese government official warned that a second explosion could occur at the plant.

The reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant are boiling-water reactors. The reactor affected by Saturday's explosion is Fukushima Daiichi 1. It was connected to the grid in November 1970, making it about 40 years old.

I'm going to be the anti-thesis here and tell everyone to listen to the japanese government. There's no need to cause widespread panic just yet, there has been no explosion of the core itself.

How it works; a meltdown occurs when the core attains "critical mass" - which means that the nuclear chain reaction inside the core has gone out of control and cannot be stopped. At that moment, if there is any remaining coolant (water) inside the core, or water is added to the core when it happens, the water will be dissected into hydrogen and oxygen due to the intense heat produced by a meltdown. This could cause a large explosion, ejecting the core's mass into the outside world. There's your chernobyl disaster.

That has not happened yet. The explosion we had seen earlier was the pressure relief system blowing up. They opened the valve too quickly which caused a hydrogen explosion. The stability or structure of the core was not compromised.

If the core is dry during meltdown, it will melt itself until there is simply nothing left. The dome which it is placed in and the building itself should contain the vast majority of the radiation leakage, and only a minimal amount will leak to the outside world - though, enough to cause some damage to the surroundings -directly outside- of the plant - BUT NO FURTHER.

If the core itself blows up, then it's time to asses the wind direction and evacuate everyone in the vicinity (atleast a 40 mile radius), especially in the area where the clouds are going to be blowing. Prematurely evacuating everyone would put stress on the relief effort which is intended to help the victims that were directly affected by the quake itself, furthermore, it would cause unnessecary panic.

And someone compared this to Chernobyl... haha... you might want to do some research before you open your mouth. This isn't even close to the same type of event. In Chernobyl, the reactor vessel was exposed, components of which caught fire. Nuclear power remains one of the safest and cleanest power sources we have developed for mass use.

Please make sure you verify your facts before airing them! Your 'science guy' is in error concerning Cesium. Cesium is NOT used to control the nuclear reaction, Boron and Hafnium control rods are. Cesium is a byproduct of nuclear fission and if found in the coolant is indicative of a fuel element failure - what the uninitiated refer to as a partial meltdown. The hydrogen explosion is a result of a reaction of the Zirconium cladding of the fuel with water - something that happens only at extremely high temperatures - another indication of a possible fuel element failure. Boron pumped into the core will poison the nuclear reaction but it will not cool the core which is the primary focus of all activity at this moment. I should know - I am a nuclear plant worker.

problem is scale deposition when too much inorganix substance touches hot core...it will insulate the core even more...and will heat it up faster ...leading to more unstable core..who will clear the scales?

Let's just hope that this "safe" s888t won't blow up and release radiation. Yesterday i saw a theoretical physicist on TV say "Thank God" the first explosion was a steam explosion. Now when such people have to go on TV and say "Thank God", that implies they have pretty much no control on what's happening there. Nuclear physicists, my a88...why don't they friggin get new jobs? They are intelligent enough anyways。

The reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant are boiling-water reactors. The reactor affected by Saturday's explosion is Fukushima Daiichi 1. It was connected to the grid in November 1970, making it about 40 years old.

What about hearing from someone who is actually an expert in modern day nuclear power generation or someone from one of the monitoring agencies? CNN surely you can do better. I'm going to be the anti-thesis here and tell everyone to listen to the japanese government. There's no need to cause widespread panic just yet, there has been no explosion of the core itself.

How it works; a meltdown occurs when the core attains "critical mass" - which means that the nuclear chain reaction inside the core has gone out of control and cannot be stopped. At that moment, if there is any remaining coolant (water) inside the core, or water is added to the core when it happens, the water will be dissected into hydrogen and oxygen due to the intense heat produced by a meltdown. This could cause a large explosion, ejecting the core's mass into the outside world. There's your chernobyl disaster.

That has not happened yet. The explosion we had seen earlier was the pressure relief system blowing up. They opened the valve too quickly which caused a hydrogen explosion. The stability or structure of the core was not compromised.

If the core is dry during meltdown, it will melt itself until there is simply nothing left. The dome which it is placed in and the building itself should contain the vast majority of the radiation leakage, and only a minimal amount will leak to the outside world - though, enough to cause some damage to the surroundings -directly outside- of the plant - BUT NO FURTHER.

If the core itself blows up, then it's time to asses the wind direction and evacuate everyone in the vicinity (atleast a 40 mile radius), especially in the area where the clouds are going to be blowing. Prematurely evacuating everyone would put stress on the relief effort which is intended to help the victims that were directly affected by the quake itself, furthermore, it would cause unnessecary panic.

And someone compared this to Chernobyl... haha... you might want to do some research before you open your mouth. This isn't even close to the same type of event. In Chernobyl, the reactor vessel was exposed, components of which caught fire. Nuclear power remains one of the safest and cleanest power sources we have developed for mass use.

Please make sure you verify your facts before airing them! Your 'science guy' is in error concerning Cesium. Cesium is NOT used to control the nuclear reaction, Boron and Hafnium control rods are. Cesium is a byproduct of nuclear fission and if found in the coolant is indicative of a fuel element failure - what the uninitiated refer to as a partial meltdown. The hydrogen explosion is a result of a reaction of the Zirconium cladding of the fuel with water - something that happens only at extremely high temperatures - another indication of a possible fuel element failure. Boron pumped into the core will poison the nuclear reaction but it will not cool the core which is the primary focus of all activity at this moment. I should know - I am a nuclear plant worker.

problem is scale deposition when too much inorganix substance touches hot core...it will insulate the core even more...and will heat it up faster ...leading to more unstable core..who will clear the scales?

Let's just hope that this "safe" s888t won't blow up and release radiation. Yesterday i saw a theoretical physicist on TV say "Thank God" the first explosion was a steam explosion. Now when such people have to go on TV and say "Thank God", that implies they have pretty much no control on what's happening there. Nuclear physicists, my a88...why don't they friggin get new jobs? They are intelligent enough anyways。
