Emivest in talks with Chinese over sale of jet firm

Posted on 7 March 2011 in Business Aviation

Dubai investment company Emivest is understood to be in high-level talks with the Chinese state-owned China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Co (CAIGA) in a bid to sell off its SJ30 jet programme

Emivest bought the ailing Sino Swearingen company in 2008 with the promise to invest a billion dollars in the programme for the SJ30 light jet and a second, larger model.

Economic woes in Dubai saw the programme halted and administrators called in.

But CAIGA is said to be interested in rescuing the jet which is recognised as the fastest and longest range aircraft in its class.

The move follows just a week after CAIGA - a unit of China's biggest plane maker, AVIC, agreed to buy US light aircraft builder Cirrus of the Bahrain investment house.

The Cirrus single-engine SR22 has been the world's best-selling four-seat airplane for nine years. CAIGA had already purchased Epic Aircraft which has a personal jet and a 12-seater turboprop among its kitplanes and has also bought engine maker Teledyne Industries Continental Engine Company.

The Emivest deal would give the Chinese company a missing piece for an effective family of aircraft that would compete with Cessna and would allow it to meet the growing demand for general and business aviation in China.

Chinese Industry Plans

Acquiring the assets of distressed U.S. aviation companies, including Epic, Continental and perhaps Emivest, appears to be a quick way for China to make a big entry onto the world's general aviation stage. Last year at Airshow China, CAIGA unveiled two new indigenous general aviation aircraft, the Seagull 300 amphibian and the Little Eagle 500, an aircraft that appears to be a copy of a Socata TB20.

Clearly, China has set its sights higher. Currently, there are only 900 general aviation aircraft based in China, but it is clear that the government there is taking aggressive steps to change that, according to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC). The USCC maintains that China's overarching national aviation policy includes large government investment in aviation, an offset policy that mandates technology transfers from foreign firms as a condition to gaining access to China, and close coordination between Chinaπs military and civil aviation sectors. In its annual report to the U.S. Congress last year, the USCC noted, "The development of China's aviation industrial base would not be possible without the strong support it receives from the Chinese government. Beijing considers China's commercial aircraft industry a strategic industry and has made its development a national priority."

技术上或许会有一点点收获;

市场前景却并不乐观;
土鳖的实际情况和美帝比大有不同,现在地价比金价贵,还要耕田放牧建厂办学修路,不可能象美国那样养22万架通用飞机、5000个中小机场、70多万飞行驾照;

Epic
