Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)Afghan forces have retaken the major city of Kunduz from Taliban militants, an Interior Ministry spokesman said early Thursday.

The city has been "cleared of terrorists who suffered heavy casualties," the spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, said in a tweet.

His message was retweeted by Afghanistan's ambassador to the United States, Hamdullah Mohib, who added, "Proud of our brave Special Security Forces."

"Afghanistan is a success story in many ways," Mohib said in a subsequent message. "We need to persevere."
