although it should not be surprising considering the amount of money they've been pouring into sciences and their defense sector lately.

I wish the plane was caught without paint. Then we can see its panels and material composition. Darn it!
I really like the one piece canopy, but the air brake seems odd--it just doesn't seem to belong on a stealth plane.
Since the engines are close together, there's always a chance the final design can incorporate stealthier exhausts.
Fascinating design, and definitely lots of opportunities for improvements!

Out of all the similar-looking planes, the F-22, F-35, and Pak-Fa, this bird is undoubtedly the meanest looking.

I love how they went for a canard config with the J-20. If anything, at least the Chinese cannot be accused of simply copying the F-22, PAK/FA.

I really want this plane to succeed, it might just spur the F-35 team to finally get it's act together and deliver a viable fighter within a reasonable timeframe.

BTW does this airplane have 3D thrust vectoring? I'm judging by the size of the tails. The F-22 has only 2D thrust vectoring and it has big tails while the PAC-FA has 3d thrust vecotring and has relatively small tails (which to a degree compensates for the increased rcs from the regularly shaped engine nozzles).
The J-XX has bigger tails like F-22 which leads me to believe that perhaps it has only 2d thrust vecotirng.
Also the engines are relatively close together.

I guess now you can't deny it is a genuine aircraft, but the question remains:

Is it a real prototype or a technology demonstrator like the YF-22 or the T-50?
It doesn't seem to have the final engines, I'm not an expert but they seem conventional without thrust vectoring.
So the question remains how far it is from serial production.
That doesn't change the fact that building a 5th gen prototype is a huge archivement and a great milestone for the chinese aviation industry.

I don't think that a full glass canopy is rocket science. The F-16 has had one since ages. A stealth canopy is another question.
I noted that the J-20 has a thick skin, common in stealth designs. The painting is smooth indeed, but it's impossible to assess whether is RAM or normal dark paint. However, the chinese never painted their prototypes before, until now. Why did they decide to do so on this one?

And yes, I also agree that aerodynamically is very close to the Mig 1.44 design. However, the stealth layout is closer to the F-22.
