Headline: “U.S. Thinks of Strategy for the populace”
Initial subtitle: “The Obama administration wants to convey how to react to a nuclear attack but is worried about seeming alarmist.”

The reasoned response for such times has already been provided, specifically, by Bush II with regard to the 9/11 attack: “Go shopping.” It worked for W; why not O? We’ve become a nation in which cognitive dissonance is the dominant behavior. (From Webster’s, cognitive dissonance: psychological conflict resulting from incongruous beliefs and attitudes held simultaneously). Further evidence for the existence of CD in our populace? Easy. Consider the ongoing (albeit largely amicable) “debate” over extending the Bush II-era tax cuts in the midst of our current budget deficits.

I was born in 1941 so I grew up with TAKE COVER! drills in the NYC public schools. I must say I never heard a child in primary school or high school express the least bit of concern about a nuclear attack on America. It was as if young people somehow saw through this. No, they didn't think there was no danger, what they didn't fall for was that there was any protection from an atom bomb. I'm not happy this is evidently returning. I was never an optimist for the human race -- although I admire it greatly and am rather fond of it -- but the banality of again worrying about atomic war offends my sense of grandeur.

Funny coincidence. New York Times talks about surviving nuclear armmageddon as Democratic Congress races to pass new START treaty. What is one of the major reasons of opposition to new START treaty? It limits our ability to deploy a ballistic missile defense system. The type of system that would prevent a rogue nation like North Korea or Iran from successfully launching a nuclear intercontinental missile against the US.

This is great news, especially for those of us who live here in Washington, DC,near anything considered of any importance to the federal government. After all, it was painfully apparent during 9/11 and afterward that if we wanted to flee in an emergency, we faced two choices: either we wouldn't be able to do so because many roads would be blocked randomly and eventually permanently (to limit access to federal buildings) or, if we could find a way out, we might not be allowed back to our homes (aforementioned reason). The daycare where my oldest child was could not even formulate an evacuation plan in case of an emergency because the federal government refused to say to residents exactly how the nearest main road would be used during an evacuation! At least this plan is more honest: every man, woman, and child is on their own. Good luck indeed.

Considering how poorly - on the Fed, State, and City level - Civil Defense was during 9/11 - better safe than sorry later in practicing for Civilian evacuation and responses for both Biological, Chemical, and Nuclear attack, as The Bush Years have created several unstable areas - Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan - where Terrorists can grow and get resources for attacks.

“It seems likely that both North Korea and Iran will relatively soon develop the capability to deliver nuclear weapons to the US. Relevant questions are what will we do once this capability is acquired, and would it be better to act before their nuclear delivery systems are fully developed?”
