India's HAL hopes to make commercial engine parts for R-R
By Leithen Francis

Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) is hoping that it can persuade Rolls-Royce to establish a joint-venture in India to make commercial engine parts for export.

"There is some dialogue going on with regards to this" but nothing has been finalised, says a senior HAL executive, who wishes to remain anonymous.

HAL already makes military engine parts under license from R-R, adds the official.

The official was responding to news reports in India, quoting undisclosed sources, as saying the two parties are in talks to establish a joint-venture to make commercial engine parts for export.

Each party would initially invest $4 million into the JV, add the reports.

A Rolls-Royce spokesman says "Rolls-Royce has long-standing industrial partnerships with Indian companies and a strategic intent to build on existing partnerships as well as establish new collaborative relationships in the future."

"We have a strategically important relationship with HAL that dates back more than 50 years."

"This relationship has contributed positively to the development of India's aerospace sector and both companies meet as a matter of course to discuss future collaborative opportunities and assess future plans."

"At this point we do not have any further comments to add."
