In fact the APR1400, with an installed capacity of 1455 MWe (4000 MWt), has its roots in a technology that is now part of the extensive Westinghouse portfolio bought by Toshiba from BNFL last year. It is an evolution of the 1000 MWe OPR1000 (Optimised Power Reactor)--formerly known as KSNP/KSNP+ (Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant)--of which there are now six in operation in Korea, with four more under construction. The OPR1000 is based on Combustion Engineering's System 80+ reactor technology, which was acquired by BNFL/Westinghouse when it purchased ABB's nuclear assets. Two System 80+ units (Yonggwang 3 and 4) have been operating in Korea for some years.

Westinghouse, KNF Team To Manufacture Control Element Assemblies
Companies to form joint venture company to manufacture control element assemblies (CEAs) for the Combustion Engineering (CE)-designed nuclear power plants

- By April Murelio -

Westinghouse Electric Company and Korea Nuclear Fuel Company (KNF) today announced they have inaugurated KW Nuclear Components Company, Ltd. (KWN) which is a joint venture to manufacture Control Element Assemblies (CEA) for the Combustion Engineering (CE)-designed nuclear power plants in the U.S. and Korea.

Under terms of the joint venture agreement, Westinghouse will hold 55 percent ownership of the joint venture and KNF will hold 45 percent ownership. The new company, KWN, will be located at the KNF fuel fabrication plant in Daejeon, 150 km south of Seoul.

The Republic of Korea has a number of CE plants (OPR1000 & APR1400) and is currently engaged in constructing six new units. Shin Kori 3 and 4 are two of the APR1400 nuclear power plants currently under construction in Korea. It is envisioned that Shin Kori 4 will include the first Control Element Assemblies manufactured by the Daejeon facility.

Joe Belechak, Westinghouse Senior Vice President, Nuclear Fuel, said this joint venture agreement will enhance Westinghouse's presence in the Republic of Korea and will continue to foster the relationship between Westinghouse and KNF.

"As the construction of OPR1000 and APR1400 nuclear power plants continues to grow in the Republic of Korea, this joint venture will enable our valued customer, KNF, to further improve the efficiency of their manufacturing operations."

Ik Hwan Lee, KNF President and CEO, said that the collaboration between Westinghouse and KNF through the joint venture KWN will be reinforced in supplying CEAs to utilities in the U.S. and Korea.

Westinghouse, majority owned by Toshiba Corporation, is the world's pioneering nuclear power company and is a leading supplier of nuclear plant products and technologies to utilities throughout the world. Westinghouse technology today is the basis for approximately one-half of the world's operating nuclear plants.

KNF, over 96-percent owned by Korea Electric Power Corporation, is the nuclear fuel supplier for PWR fuels and CANDU fuels in Korea. KNF performs the initial core design and reload core design, including the safety analysis, and has also been developing an advanced fuel called X-Gen.

Korean Team to Build U.A.E. Nuclear Plants
U.A.E. awards $20.4 billion contract for four reactors in breakthrough on world stage for Korea Electric Power
By MARGARET COKER
ABU DHABI—A Korean-led consortium on Sunday won a landmark contract, valued at about $20.4 billion, to build four nuclear reactors in the United Arab Emirates, ending a closely watched contest between bidders from Asia, France and the U.S.

The victory for Korea Electric Power Co., in conjunction with construction units of the Samsung and Hyundai business groups and with Westinghouse Electric Co., a unit of Japan's Toshiba Corp., marks the first international deal for the Asian nation's nuclear industry. It is expected to boost Korea's footprint in the increasingly active global nuclear business, dominated by French, Japanese, U.S. and Russian companies.

The announcement Sunday in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the wealthy federation of seven Persian Gulf sheikhdoms, marks the end of a yearlong, high-stakes commercial and diplomatic endeavor to convince world powers that this young Mideast nation, located some 100 miles away from Iran, can safely develop an indigenous nuclear-energy program. The U.A.E's project would mark the first fleet of civilian nuclear power reactors in the region.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the lavish Emirates Palace hotel, U.A.E. President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nayan said the deal marked a "new stage of strategic partnership" between the U.A.E. and South Korea.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who attended the ceremony, said in a prepared statement that the deal with the U.A.E., one of the world's largest oil exporters, could bolster energy security for his country, a big net importer of oil.

Despite its petroleum wealth, the U.A.E. has ambitions to diversify its economy away from natural resources. Economic forecasts show the country's power demand growing sharply over the next two decades, far outstripping its current capacity. Short on the natural gas it takes to run its electric plants, officials here decided last year that nuclear energy would be both the cleanest and most cost-effective way to meet their energy demands.

U.A.E. nuclear officials said that the Korean bid, one of three short-listed for the reactor deal, represented the one with the highest safety standards and met the stringent commercial requirements that would ensure the nation could go online with nuclear energy by 2017.

WSJ.com/Mideast: News, video, graphics Other bidders were a French consortium that included Areva, GdF Suez SA, Electricite de France and Total SA and a U.S.-Japanese consortium including General Electric Co. and Hitachi Ltd.

The award is a blow to France, which has pinned hopes on harnessing the growing global appetite for nuclear energy by exporting its well-honed technology and know-how. The French bid had been seen by outsiders as an early favorite. But a number of factors, including price and a track record of on-time delivery, benefited the Koreans, according to U.A.E. nuclear officials familiar with the situation.

Members of the French consortium said in a statement on Sunday that they remained open to future nuclear cooperation with the U.A.E. General Electric, majority leader of the GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy joint venture, declined to comment on its failed bid.

Westinghouse wasn't a finalist for the U.A.E. project but joined the Korea bid and as a result will gain equipment, engineering and fuel-service contracts that will sustain hundreds of U.S. jobs . "We welcome competition," said a spokesman at the Pittsburgh-based company, which is 67%-owned by Toshiba.

The value of the deal was also less than some expected, with some estimates having been as high as $40 billion. U.A.E. officials said construction costs have dropped dramatically since their nuclear plans were unveiled before the global economic crisis, and Sunday's contract represented just the first part of a larger fleet of reactors.

A bevy of Arab nations have declared in recent years their intent to pursue nuclear energy, a prospect that has attracted controversy due to the instability and growth of radical groups in the region. The U.A.E., however, won international political backing due in part to the nation's guarantee that it would buy the enriched fuel needed to run its reactors from the international market and not process its own.

That measure, in addition to the strict regulatory standards being instituted here, has earned praise from the U.S. administration.

Still, some U.S. officials have voiced reservations about nuclear security. Iranian entities have been known to use front companies based in Dubai, the commercial capital of the country, to import sensitive military technologies. U.A.E. officials say they are cracking down on such shell companies and working to prevent materials sanctioned by the United Nations from reaching Iran.

With more than half of the world's 439 nuclear reactors expected to be retired by 2030, and nuclear-power plants gaining appeal because they don't emit greenhouse gases, demand for nuclear technology is expected to grow sharply.

Korea, which built its first commercial nuclear reactor in 1978 and now receives 40% of its electricity from 20 reactors, hopes to make nuclear infrastructure exports a pillar of its economy much like cars and electronic goods, according to presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan.

Chang Soon-heung, a professor of the department of nuclear and quantum engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, said the U.A.E. deal would be "a great start for Koreans to advance further in the age of a nuclear renaissance."

    :D俺们想百家争鸣嘛
现在看到棒子就恶心   无差别恶心   {:3_91:}
