Russia exports $540.9 mln worth of rough diamonds in Q3
Russia exported over 5.3 million carats of rough diamonds worth $540.9 million in July-September 2009, the Finance Ministry said on Thursday.
Compared with the second quarter of 2009, the exports of rough diamonds doubled in terms of volume and increased 18 times in terms of value. Figures were calculated using the Kimberley process certification scheme.
In particular, Russia exported over 4 million carats of rough diamonds worth $430.8 million to Belgium, and about 861,600 carats worth $82.2 million to Israel, the ministry said.
At the same time, the importation of diamonds into Russia grew in terms of value and decreased in terms of volume. In particular, Russia imported over 36,200 carats of diamonds worth $36.4 million, largely from Israel and Belgium.
Alrosa, Russia's largest diamond miner, sold diamonds worth $1.73 billion in January-October 2009.
Alrosa CEO Fyodor Andreyev said earlier the company intended to sell diamonds worth $2.75 billion in 2009 or about the same volume it sold in 2008.
Alrosa accounts for 97% of Russian and 25% of global diamond output.
