1,澳大利亚人1:
Amazing and spectacular so far......but I felt that was a rather severe breach of etiquette to have the PLA involved in the opening ceremony....I cannot recall any other opening ceremony were soldiers have been employed.
After all, Beijing has consistently asked that this event not be politicized, yet they deign to have members of their Army march centre stage.
Other than, it has been extremely impressive so far.

Does anyone even care about the Olympics. We were half-watching here and there the opening ceremony (is it still going on?) and spent most of the time making fun of everything we saw, barely gave it all a second thought. Some of the stuff there was impressive though, that's about it.
Compared to what you see in this country (and many, many others) when the FIFA World Cup is happening, the Olympics is NOTHING. Only Americans & hosts care about the Olympics (in terms of the general population), maybe that's why people have this illusion of it being so big.
All in all, screw the Olympics. More politics than sport and half the athletes are doped up.
Of course they're going to involve the PLA, the country is a f*cking police state/dictatorship. Images of North Koreas "mass games" come to mind. I mean it looks impressive, but at the end of the day the countries are still pretty messed up.
Maybe people here will have a different view because they're all older. But that's what I think it's like.

It is a great pleasure for me to congratulate the Chinese people for a very beautiful, imaginative and spectacular opening ceremony!
May the Olympic spirit bring happiness and Friendship to the World!

I think the PLA soldiers were there just because they are good at flag raising. I mean flag raising in HOng Kong and China is almost always done by soldiers or disciplinary force.

So they weren't showing it live because they want to splice adverts in-between?
Damn those capitalists (and I'm not being sarcastic or making a joke about the whole chinese communism thing either, I really do think sometimes they go too far)
Especially when they have an advert every five seconds during an NFL Football game
At least here we have the BBC, which is funded via TV Licensing so that there's no adverts, ever
