Most F-15 fighter jets at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa were still cleared for flying Thursday, despite the crash of two F-15C planes in midair Wednesday, near Florida, according to base officials.

The fighter jets assigned to the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Base, Fla., are believed to have collided while on a training mission over the Gulf of Mexico in clear weather.

Both pilots were rescued, but one later died.

As of Thursday, 17 of the 18th Wing’s 56 F-15 Eagles remained grounded at Kadena, part of a stand-down after the Nov. 2 crash of a Missouri Air National Guard F-15C.

The jets assigned to the 18th Wing are F-15C and F-15D models.

Kadena’s grounded planes, however, could soon be cleared for flying.

Gen. John D.W. Corley, Air Combat Command, last week recommended that grounded F-15A-D aircraft within ACC and other commands, including Pacific Air Forces, return to flying operations once customized inspections are completed, according to information provided Thursday by Kadena public affairs officials.

Being inspected are longerons — longitudinal structural components of an aircraft’s fuselage.

“At this time, the commander of Pacific Air Forces is reviewing the recommendation, and Kadena is awaiting further guidance,” officials said in a release.

“In the meantime, maintenance experts here are in the process of completing the customized inspections and preparing the aircraft to return to flying status.”

The Missouri Air National Guard F-15 Eagle that crashed broke in half due to the failure of the upper right longeron, according to Air Force officials.

An Air Force fleetwide investigation following the incident found that nine F-15s had cracks in their longerons. Two of them were based at Kadena.

On Jan. 9, ACC cleared about 60 percent of its F-15A-D model aircraft for flight.
