EVENT:

Local government officials stated on 13 March that a riot in the southern Hunan province had been calmed.


The riot, involving an estimated 20,000 people in the town of Zhushan, near the city of Yongzhou, led to the deployment of more than 1,000 police officers and an unknown number of armed personnel.

The riot focused on increases in local transport fees over the lunar new year, with a bus journey rising from CNY5 (USD0.65) to CNY9. During the riot, seven police vehicles, nine public buses and a government vehicle were destroyed.

The violence is indicative of a trend in China for a greater number of protests and an increasing propensity to defy the will of the local government and police. According to the Ministry of Public Security, there were 87,000 public protests in 2005, an increase of 6.6 per cent over the previous year.

FORECAST

For the short term the central government is not threatened by such riots, but as inequality grows and corruption continues, these protests may target the ruling Chinese Communist Party, particularly if combined with faltering economic growth.EVENT:
