A rally againstracism and xenophobia on Saturday drew tens of thousands of people in theeastern German city of Dresden, which has become the centre of anti-immigrationprotests organised by a new anti-Islam movement called PEGIDA.
"We won't permitthat hate will divide us", Dresden's mayor Helma Orosz said in front ofthe 18th-century Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady).

The movementPatriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West (PEGIDA) is holdingweekly rallies in Dresden with a record number of 18,000 people attending lastMonday.
Chancellor AngelaMerkel has condemned the anti-Muslim demonstrations, urging Germans to turntheir backs on the movement and calling their organisers racists full ofhatred.
A recent survey,conducted before Wednesday's deadly attack on a French satirical magazine,showed that an increasing majority of non-Muslim Germans feel threatened byIslam.
The Paris attack hasfuelled fears that it could boost anti-immigration movements around Europe andinflame a culture war about the place of religion and ethnic identity insociety.
Speaking after aparty meeting of her Christian Democrats (CDU) in Hamburg earlier on Saturday,Merkel stressed the need for intercultural dialogue and warned againstprejudice.
"We have madeclear that the events in France, this barbaric terrorist act, are a challengefor all of us, for the values that we advocate, to fight for them," shesaid, adding that people must differentiate between Islam and religiousfanatics.
Merkel who will takepart in a silent march in Paris on Sunday also welcomed a decision byleading Muslim groups in Germany to organise a vigil in Berlin next week
