The service life of a ship / submarine varies between 25 to 30 years depending on the class, type and size of platform. Various factors govern the operation of ships / submarines beyond their life span such as force level requirements, utility of the platform, planned replacements of ships / submarines and their induction schedule, status of hull machinery, weapons, sensors as well as equipment and material upgrades and life extension undertaken.
Upgradation of in-service ships and submarines is undertaken towards enhancing operational / combat capability of these platforms. These are planned during the Medium / Normal Refits of the ships / submarines. Further, ships / submarines are replaced on completion of their planned service life through new inductions. Currently 44 ships and submarines are under construction at various Indian shipyards which are likely to be inducted into the Indian Navy in the XIIth, XIIIth and XIVth Plan periods.
This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Arun Jaitley in a written reply to Shri Venkatesh Babu T.G in Lok Sabha today.
