US accuses China of provoking Philippines

Washington (AFP) - The United States criticized China as provocative Monday after its coast guard tried to block a Philippine vessel that was rotating troops in the tense South China Sea.

The attempted Chinese blockade, which led to a two-hour standoff with the Philippine ship, is "a provocative and destabilizing action," State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters.

Harf said that the Philippines had permission to resupply troops to the remote reef, the Second Thomas Shoal, because it has kept a naval presence there since before a 2002 declaration of conduct in the South China Sea.

"As a treaty ally of the Republic of the Philippines, the United States urges China to refrain from further provocative behavior by allowing the Philippines to continue to maintain its presence at Second Thomas Shoal," she said.

The incident was the latest in the South China Sea, where China claims a vast area that overlaps with several neighbors' claims.

On March 9, China successfully turned away a similar resupply boat from the Philippines.

The United States has been warning China against taking more drastic action in the South China Sea after it declared an air defense identification zone in November over much of the East China Sea, including islands administered by Japan.

The Philippines made its first claim to the disputed islands in 1971. Could everyone check out before that, and long before that what happened regarding these islands? China had five official maps included these islands into its sovereignty, dated 1724, 1755, 1767, 1810 and 1817 respectively. In 1935, the Republic of China gave official names to all the 132 islands in South China Sea. In 1933, France invaded nine of the Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands is what you call them.), expelled Chinese fishermen lived on the islands, and the Chinese government lodged strong protest to France. The Philippines, 1971, you have no shame. Does anyone think there still was any island left as late as 1971 without sovereign ownership?
Spain and the U.S., who owned the whole Philippines successively for nearly one century, never made claims to any of these disputed islands, because they knew it's china's.
China don't want to the international tribunal because we don't believe the judges from western countries and Japan, who are following secret strategies to contain China, will treat China fairly and be free of prejudice against China.
See how many Chinese descendants are now living in southeast Asia, they even built a country there, then you can imagined how intensively the Chinese voyaged on the South China Sea in the last millennium. Do you know Admiral Zheng He of Ming dynasty led a fleet of more than 200 ships with 27 thousand soldiers on board venturing seven times by way of the South China Sea to India, the Middle East and Africa. It's natural for the then Chinese government to include the islands in the South China Sea into the official maps of China in eighteenth and nineteenth century.

Wrote a note regarding this, and had a self proclaimed Philipine jumped on me like no tomorrow. My feeling on this is that U.S. has stated we have no bias on the ownership of the reef. Philippines was under US occupation, don't believe we'd say so if we believe the reef belongs to Philippines 100%.

While it is wrong to see a powerful one bullying on a weak one, but it's worse to see a weak one keep picking on a strong one for a instant fight. Philippines has been provoking China endless lately, so what have been left for China to do except to honor Philippines' request? Does U.S. truly ready to fight such a war for Philippines, if so, why? If not, why feed the delusional Philippine with more of this type of delusional medicines?

How much material did we send over there to build that Chinese ship? Did you know that everything you buy that says "made in China" goes to the people's republic army. Yes, lets keep making the Chinese wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, so they will eventually shoot it back at us. Has anyone heard about Tibet lately? The Chinese are doing to Tibet what the Japanese did to them in WWII. And the Chinese are whining about Japan and WWII. What a bunch of hypocrites.Just what did Obama sell down the river for America? If the international community doesn't do anything about these provocative military advances the Chinese are doing now, later will be too late. Does anybody really care anymore?

scary, no not threats of war with the rest of the world that were currently experiencing, but most of these comments i read, are there really that many uninformed, idiotic, uneducated, ignorant, people ? the views are from 1 extreme to the other. WOW, i have no faith that we could unite on a front if were that far apart and dilusional as a society, well, thank god i can count on modern technologies to try and protect my backside for now. maybe the dumb and stupid of government has trickled down to society, or ur opions and beliefs purchased through their handouts ? regaurdless, the u.s. needs to back out of all the drama, these are diversions of our attention to leave ourselves spread too thin and unprepared, u.s. troops secure our homeland borders, build up our military with (most importantly educated !!) strong, large, numbers while economically, sanction / tax ANY/EVERY import while RE-educating americans to be independant and productive of those very needs/wants/desires, and maybe after a while we can be the leading manufacturers we once were that the world admired and also militarily feared. hope i see this again before my time ends here on earth.

The Philippines is the most asian friendly nation. These people love America. They were once part of America. If you ask me, we should have made it a territory just like Guam. The filipino people really admire and respect and appreciate what the great General Douglas MacArthur did for them. America should always help the Phillippine country whenever they need our help. Afterall our military fought right along with their military during the The Battle of Leyte in the Pacific campaign of World War II. The US should reinstate its military bases in the Philippines.

Treaties under the Obama regime are as worthless as the paper they are written on. The Philippines along with the other SE Asian countries sharing the South China Sea including Japan need to come up with a unified response to China's bullying in the area. It would be nice if the U.S. Navy could patrol the Shoals as well but unfortunately our ships are chasing a Malaysian phantom.

The brutal Chinese Communist Party is using one of the oldest political tricks in the book. Trying to make its people focus their anger on an outside enemy when their true enemy is the CCP.
The brutal Chinese Communist Party has murdered over fifty million of its own people since 1949, since 1999 it has been attempting the blood-thirsty genocide of the tens of millions of innocent Falun Gong who live in Mainland China. To this end, the heinous CCP is using torture, slavery, organ harvesting and murder. Because of corporate greed, these atrocities and millions of others have been kept from the Western people by the Western media. The weak United Nations even appointed the brutal CCP a seat on its Human Rights Council this year. Shameful. Thank you for your concern.

America is confused, and the there is an old adage which says he who wants hold everything would hold nothing in the final analysis. America wants to be everywhere and now has a problem with Russia,China, Syria,Iran and finally North Korea. America would end finally without anything and that is how empires fall.

China's understanding of legality is very primitive - might makes right. It is the way legal disputes are settled in China. It is also the way China views the 'legal' treaties that itself was forced to sign with Britain, Japan, France and other European powers after the 19th century wars.

China is now projecting the same attitude towards the Philippines and Vietnam. China sincerely believes it owns the South China sea simply because it has by far, the strongest navy.

China, claiming itself in antiquity to be the center of the world...actually exerted superiority over what it calls "barbarian" nations...and many rulers of such nations...such as the Sultan Batara of Sulu did pay tributes to the Chinese Emperor... But in modern times, China's claim to lands close to the shores of neighboring countries... is a farce. If its 9-dash logic is to be recognized, then Spain should still be Sovereign in many nations...in the Americas...including some states of the USA. China's emergence as a bully was and is being made possible by the West's continued support of the Chinese economy..

If the Philippine government is corrupt they should look at the Chinese government. They recently frozen $14 billion dollars of assets from one of Bo's side kick and his cronies! Marcos' plunder was only $2 billion over 20 years and Bo's not even the premier or president he's just a provincial head equivalent to a state governor. If you count the number of central committee members and their extended families and gang, imagine the amount of hidden wealth of these party officials! Yes a lot of Philippine officials are corrupt as hell but not to the extent that the Chinese government officials corruption.

They even ban Bloomberg in China because of the report on the top leader's family assets which extends into the billions as well!

Let's all agree that it was Philippines' mistake that they did not resign the agreement to extend Subic but hey, one shouldn't remember that both our Grand-daddies in USAFFE stood side by side during World War II in Bataan and many other places when they still call Southeast Asia the Far East. 5 years later, together they withered the communist mass attacks in Korea, fighting often hand to hand when bullets run out against the North Koreans and Chinese in the Korean War. 20 years or so later, Our parents fought against the combined might of the Chinese and Vietnamese forces in the unforgiving jungles of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. So before all the CPP trolls and PH haters there say anthing. The US and Philippines have one thing in common. They are mothafuc**** brothers in combat, they spilled blood together and trust each other when times get tough and y'all commies should tremble once the time arises when both go to war once more.

Blame Erap and his stupidity for pulling that " sovereignty" card in kicking out the US forces .
Orlando, the Philippines is a former US colony. My uncle who just passed away told me they used to sing two national anthem at the start of school ( everyday ).
The Philippines gained independence right after Japan's surrender .
The Philippine constitution was patterned over the US Constitution.
There used to be a two-party system in the Philippines even.

Isn't this the same sea where the malaysian airplane was said to have gone down? I thought all of the warships that were reported to be in that area were looking for that plane? Could the actual story (that we are not being told) be that China is taking a stance against US military bases that pretty much surround China? Between Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, the US seems to have a lot of problems on its hands since the Snowden revelations... I wonder what those countries have uncovered from those documents that has yet to be leaked to the public? Im guessing only time will tell....

Logically, the Chinese claim is very hard to defend. Law of the Sea and ISA rules as well as EEZ considerations would drastically reduce the size of China's claim.

Malaysia and Brunei would also seem to have a basis for a further quarrel if the map of competing claims is accurate!!

For those skeptics that believe we would allow China to gobble up the Philippine because the US owes China a lot of money and supplies America with so many goods and services....hogwash. The US military getting involved in action preventing China from crossing the ocean and air space to invade Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam is the quickest way to eliminate that debt! It would make us wealthy again. ha ha ha

This is a simple case of the Chinese BULLYING a small country's sovereign right to protect their seas.
EXPANSIONISM in the air or seas by China must be stopped by all countries who has the moral obligation and join in the fight that the Philippines is bringing to the International tribunal. If we let the Chinese get their way with small neighboring countries to give in fearing military and economic pressure, What's NEXT???
They have saturated the world with poor products that is being consumed and used everyday, POLLUTED the very soul of Mother Earth and now harassing peaceful neighboring countries.

I STAND BY AND SUPPORT THE PHILIPPINES FIGHT TO STOP CHINA FROM DECLARING A TERRITORY THAT DOESN'T BELONG TO THEM.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

Thank you U.S.A. for standing up with one of your most loyal allies in South East Asia against Chinese blatant, immoral, and hostile move to illegally claim territories that doesn't belong to her. China is the new IMPERIALIST in Asia. Philippines, U.S. relationship has been tested with blood, sweat, and tears during WWII, and the strong historical ties that bind both countries together can't be ignored. This Chinese aggression will help unite the Filipino people. Filipinos may not have the might, but if pushed too far, they will fight.

"China is not going to listen to and obey a country that owes them billions of dollars." - I beg to differ. The US is a bigger customer for the chinx plastic dog ship than all of Europe combined, not to mention their largest foreign employer. If we'd forward deploy a second carrier strike group to the region under the pretext of defending ourselves from China's chihuahua in North Korea, the chankoros would pipe down. Even Carter would have done that by now.
