An Air India commander flew his mother from Pune to Delhi on a jump seat in the plane’s cockpit after the ground staff informed him that the flight was full.

The pilot allegedly forced the duty manager at Pune airport to issue a “dummy boarding card” to ensure that his mother had access to the aircraft after he discovered that the flight was overbooked, sources said.

A source close to the pilot, however, said he had “no option” because his mother was sick and he could not have left her at the airport.

He had made an advance request for a seat — on a “staff on leave” (SOL) free ticket entitlement — on the morning flight he was operating on April 9, sources said.

The airline’s rules state that an SOL passage, which is transferable to a staff’s family, is subject to the availability of a seat.

When his mother reached the airport, the pilot was told that there was no possibility of fulfilling the request because the flight was full and, in fact, a passenger had to be put on a Jet Airways flight departing around the same time, the sources said.

“When the pilot insisted on taking his mother on board, the operations and commercial departments were informed.

The pilot threatened that he would not fly without his mother,” a senior airport official said.

The station manager’s report says the flight, with 122 passengers on board, was delayed for 20 minutes because of the confusion

The GM (Western region) investigated the matter after it was brought to my notice,” Air India CMD Rohit Nandan said, adding that necessary disciplinary action has been initiated.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) rules prohibit anyone, other than the airline’s licenced crew or authorised persons, from entering the cockpit. An aviation safety expert said apart from being an obvious risk to the flight, the insurance company would have come down heavily on the airline if the flight had met with an accident.
