The vulnerability of women from the northeast and the sexual harassment faced by them in Delhi has been catalogued in the international four-city study labelled "Learning from Women to Create Gender Inclusive Cities'', which was presented at the three-day international conference on safe cities for women in the capital that concluded on Wednesday. The study takes into account the vulnerability of women working in call centres in Delhi.

The Delhi chapter of the study has a section, `Place of origin', highlighting that students and young women from the northeast states reported facing particular forms of discrimination. Young women reported being called names such as "chinki'', "momos'', "thukpas'' and "noodles''.

They said they feel secure wearing I-cards so that they're not misunderstood if they are out waiting for their cabs at night.

The saddest part is, most of the people in india dont have any idea where northeast is....they dont know whether its in india or in china....its d fault of education because no chapters is included for d students to learn about north east,the fact is it is not seen as a part of india by the govnt itself so what to expect form others....people have all unwannted stories to tell about NE...they have no idea how well d north indians are treated wen they visit the"7 sisters"...and i think that this 7 states are well more educated and developed wen compared to d rest of india interms of hospitality...visit and u will know!!!!

If these girls look aroun they will find that other girls from Delhi also face the similar problem but probably have resigned to their fate. The term madrasi originated in Bombay in the post independence era when trains full of people from Tamil Nadu would come to Bombay every day in search of work and since most people only knew madras presidency before the states were organised, the migrants would simple say they were from madras, hence the term madrasi. Oh just to add, there is a place by the name of matunga in Bombay, it used to be full of tamilians (there still are a majority in that area),so much so that it was joking called as matungam ;) Btw, does any1 know why are biharis and upwalas called bhayyas in Mumbai? hat terminology originated because a very large chunk of Southern India came under the Madras province. Besides, most people from the north at that time only know about Madras from the South because it was the most prosperous city. So silly people continue to call any Southern as Madrasi.

North Indians behave like brutes. They lack courtesy and of course are quite racial. Not only with NE but also with the South. Their behavior is atrocious. They think others are fools and sometimes their uncouth behavior is nauseating. No where in the world they are liked. India has a bad name all over the place because of these people. There are many who migrate from other states and finely blend with the countries where they settle but North Indians do not. The uneducated lot is worse. Delhi is the capital of boors. No wonder Marathis hate them. In fact many states hate them but are just good enough to be polite but not for long.

Delhi has attained notoriety for such acts. There is no denying that the NCR is unsafe for women especially people from North East. I also 同意 with Lungleng that our North Eastern brethen have never been whole heartedly accepted by the so called mainland people. They are as much Indian as anyone else and have full freedom to move around. If the Tibetans who settled here from China have been given freedom and rights then why not our North East brethen since they have been a part of this soil for thousands of years.

This is not something new, even in the past their Lord Krishna used to tease girls, ran away with their clothes while they were taking bath. The delhi police is responsible for failure of law and order. They have failed to protect the girls from such eve teasing and harrasment. I'm from Nagaland and i'm not surprise most of us in Nagaland don't consider ourselves as 'indians'. We should separate from the Indian Union in the not too distant future. If India considers herself a true democracy she should not occupy people by force but she should let the people of Nagaland and the seven sister states to decide their own faith. Being under the Indian Union is seriously hampering our growth. It's ridiculous walking on the streets of Ne Delhi...it feels like a foreign country. I am sure North and south divide is already there.Look at KA,AP,TN and kerala, more people are educated and IT revolution is happning there and people know that breaking law is illegal.Some of them break the law knowing it is illegal but in north breaking law is like heroism and killing people is pride worest part is they don't know it is illegal.I wish people like Nitish kumar take over entire north INDIA and inject some INDIAN culture into them particularly UP and Delhi surrounding areas to succede as a country.I am sure NE is not getting their due share in development pie,there may be multiple reasons,one of them is too many small states, i hope Govt of INDIA fix it.

Yoko, I fully understand your frustration, I am from the south and face more or less the same kind of treatment calling Madharasi in a bad tone and nasty way in Delhi, you come to study in Bangalore or Chennai, you are OK. The term madrasi originated in Bombay in the post independence era when trains full of people from Tamil Nadu would come to Bombay every day in search of work and since most people only knew madras presidency before the states were organised, the migrants would simple say they were from madras, hence the term madrasi. Oh just to add, there is a place by the name of matunga in Bombay, it used to be full of tamilians (there still are a majority in that area),so much so that it was joking called as matungam ;) Btw, does any1 know why are biharis and upwalas called bhayyas in Mumbai? hat terminology originated because a very large chunk of Southern India came under the Madras province. Besides, most people from the north at that time only know about Madras from the South because it was the most prosperous city. So silly people continue to call any Southern as Madrasi.

North Indians behave like brutes. They lack courtesy and of course are quite racial. Not only with NE but also with the South. Their behavior is atrocious. They think others are fools and sometimes their uncouth behavior is nauseating. No where in the world they are liked. India has a bad name all over the place because of these people. There are many who migrate from other states and finely blend with the countries where they settle but North Indians do not. The uneducated lot is worse. Delhi is the capital of boors. Delhi has attained notoriety for such acts. There is no denying that the NCR is unsafe for women especially people from North East. I also 同意 with Lungleng that our North Eastern brethen have never been whole heartedly accepted by the so called mainland people. They are as much Indian as anyone else and have full freedom to move around. If the Tibetans who settled here from China have been given freedom and rights then why not our North East brethen since they have been a part of this soil for thousands of years.

This is not something new, even in the past their Lord Krishna used to tease girls, ran away with their clothes while they were taking bath. I'm from Nagaland and i'm not surprise most of us in Nagaland don't consider ourselves as 'indians'. We should separate from the Indian Union in the not too distant future. If India considers herself a true democracy she should not occupy people by force but she should let the people of Nagaland and the seven sister states to decide their own faith. Being under the Indian Union is seriously hampering our growth. It's ridiculous walking on the streets of Ne Delhi...it feels like a foreign country. I am sure North and south divide is already there.Look at KA,AP,TN and kerala, more people are educated and IT revolution is happning there and people know that breaking law is illegal.Some of them break the law knowing it is illegal but in north breaking law is like heroism and killing people is pride worest part is they don't know it is illegal.I wish people like Nitish kumar take over entire north INDIA and inject some INDIAN culture into them particularly UP and Delhi surrounding areas to succede as a country.I am sure NE is not getting their due share in development pie,there may be multiple reasons,one of them is too many small states, i hope Govt of INDIA fix it.

north indian hairy monkey men will never know manners towards women. most of my close friends in my engineering college were from NE and thats why it makes my blood boil hearing this news. the problem is that the police are also having the same attitude as the rest of the men from delhi, behaving just as if not worse than other delhi guys towards NE women. my suggestion is that few of the police stations near colleges and other places where a lot of NE people live should be headed by a NE inspector. it might just work. NE can be developed so much better than the north, with the natural resources there. the government unfortunately treats NE like a tourist spot and only concentrates on their local tribal culture, dances etc. not a bad thing, but thats not going to improve people's lives. concentrate on setting up industries, businesses etc.

I have served in the North East for a couple of years when I was in uniform and can say honestly and frankly that the women there have far more principles than their counterparts in North India. While we in the north tend to be crude, in the NE men and women are far more civilised and principled. The problem lies with our politicians who have never looked at the NE as part of India, except when it is election time. There are no industries there, the political parties, especially the Congress from the 80s onwards, corrupted the politicians of the NE and it is sad to see the people suffer through lack of development. The people themselves are hardworking. simple and honest. It is a pity hat they have to face the crudities and ignorance of the people in the north especially the police when they come out of their states for a better education and future

I don't see anything wrong in China claiming the whole north-east part of India. I myself has seen situations where people from north-east are made fun of. They are Indians like we are and stupid people will never understand this. If this continues, my suggestion to north-east Indians would be to call yourself as Chinese instead of Indians. I was an international student in DU and had many NE friends and I have witnessed many humiliating racist encounters during my three years in Delhi. My whole experience of being in India would have been so much better had the people been more supporting. I fell in love with the country, its culture and rich tradition but when i was groped in metro or stared at on the streets, it was a nightmare for me. Feel like aliens? Never! How can people from Northeast feels like aliens when they are aliens in India? Northeaterners are not Indians; they share only federation. I honestly feel that Indians are the one of the most racist / regionalist people around. We create new names for Gujaratis (Gujju), Tamilians and all those down south as 'Madrasis' and of course, those in NE India as 'chinks' or whatever. It just goes to show how shallow our mentality as a country is. This point about harassment to Delhi is nothing new, it happens to all women and calling the police in Delhi as eunuchs is an insult to eunuchs themselves. When we as Indians see something wrong happening, we are third party observers, paralyzed ... Whether someone is choking on the street or undergoing a fit, or two girls killed in broad daylight in Mumbai's Gateway of India. No one wants to involve himself / herself since they don't don't to 'waste' their time. Hopefully this will change. And change soon. It is shameful indeed.

I am a born Indian and naturalized American. I am not made to feel like an alien in America or face racial slurrs. This problem is an Indian problem and has to be solved by Indians. It is not faced by the people of North East in Delhi alone, but by all Indians who migrate to other parts of India. As a student in Mumbai, I have obeserved people of South and North being subjected to racial slurrs on regular basis, without any one being prosecuted ever.

I have seen crude people in Pune look curiously at the NE girls who come for work or as students similarly. The typical first question asked of them is "Are you chinese ?" When they say "no I am from Mizoram" the local crudo says" uhhh?" north indian hairy monkey men will never know manners towards women. most of my close friends in my engineering college were from NE and thats why it makes my blood boil hearing this news. the problem is that the police are also having the same attitude as the rest of the men from delhi, behaving just as if not worse than other delhi guys towards NE women. my suggestion is that few of the police stations near colleges and other places where a lot of NE people live should be headed by a NE inspector. it might just work. NE can be developed so much better than the north, with the natural resources there. the government unfortunately treats NE like a tourist spot and only concentrates on their local tribal culture, dances etc. not a bad thing, but thats not going to improve people's lives. concentrate on setting up industries, businesses etc.

I have served in the North East for a couple of years when I was in uniform and can say honestly and frankly that the women there have far more principles than their counterparts in North India. While we in the north tend to be crude, in the NE men and women are far more civilised and principled. The problem lies with our politicians who have never looked at the NE as part of India, except when it is election time. There are no industries there, the political parties, especially the Congress from the 80s onwards, corrupted the politicians of the NE and it is sad to see the people suffer through lack of development. The people themselves are hardworking. simple and honest. It is a pity hat they have to face the crudities and ignorance of the people in the north especially the police when they come out of their states for a better education and future

I don't see anything wrong in China claiming the whole north-east part of India. I myself has seen situations where people from north-east are made fun of. They are Indians like we are and stupid people will never understand this. If this continues, my suggestion to north-east Indians would be to call yourself as Chinese instead of Indians. You'd be safe and happier there than being called INDIANS.

I was an international student in DU and had many NE friends and I have witnessed many humiliating racist encounters during my three years in Delhi. My whole experience of being in India would have been so much better had the people been more supporting. I fell in love with the country, its culture and rich tradition but when i was groped in metro or stared at on the streets, it was a nightmare for me. I still suggest my friends ( girls) not to opt to study in Delhi. But I have been to goa, manali and mumbai, people are nicer there.they certainly have more respect towards women..

Feel like aliens? Never! How can people from Northeast feels like aliens when they are aliens in India? Northeaterners are not Indians; they share only federation. How can you say that a man or woman from Delhi or Mumbai a Meitei, Naga, Assmamese or Mizo? We are under Indian Union but we are not Indians. Therefore Northeast people should not consider themself as Indians; they should live as aliens in Indian states. This is not racism; this is truth. I honestly feel that Indians are the one of the most racist / regionalist people around. We create new names for Gujaratis (Gujju), Tamilians and all those down south as 'Madrasis' and of course, those in NE India as 'chinks' or whatever. It just goes to show how shallow our mentality as a country is. This point about harassment to Delhi is nothing new, it happens to all women and calling the police in Delhi as eunuchs is an insult to eunuchs themselves. When we as Indians see something wrong happening, we are third party observers, paralyzed ... Whether someone is choking on the street or undergoing a fit, or two girls killed in broad daylight in Mumbai's Gateway of India. No one wants to involve himself / herself since they don't don't to 'waste' their time. Hopefully this will change. And change soon. It is shameful indeed.

Its Happening all over India ... at time i feel all Indian People are just given big mouth so they can talk all bad things.. Its good to hear sometime .. when Indian people are beaten up in some foreign land's...but they never learn a lesson ...

I am a born Indian and naturalized American. I am not made to feel like an alien in America or face racial slurrs. This problem is an Indian problem and has to be solved by Indians. It is not faced by the people of North East in Delhi alone, but by all Indians who migrate to other parts of India. As a student in Mumbai, I have obeserved people of South and North being subjected to racial slurrs on regular basis, without any one being prosecuted ever.
